CA 02493091 2007-08-21 CLAIMS:1. A method for controlling operation of a drilling rig using a control management system for controlling at least one resource module, the method comprising the steps of: a) programming said control management system with at least one set of operating parameters, said at least one resource module having at least one operating model having at least one set of programmed operating rules related to the at least one set of operating parameters: b) providing access to a plurality of users: c) providing a set of authenticating rules to authenticate at least one user: d) providing hierarchical access to said at least one user to said at least one resource module: e) allow ing said at least one user to input an adjusted value for at least one of the set of operating parameters in the at least one resource module;f) comparing said adjusted value to said at least one set of programmed operating rules and allowing adjustment if said adjusted value is within said operating rules;g) providing an indication if said adjusted value is not w ithin said operating rules;and h) providing a supervisor override to prevent acceptance of said adjusted value.
  2. 2
The method in accordance with claim 1. wherein said authenticating rules and said hierarchical access is programmed at the drilling rig.
  3. 3
The method in accordance with claim 1. wherein a first allocated resource module having a first set of operating parameters is accessible to only one user at a time.
  4. 4
The method in accordance with claim 2. further comprising an interlock system for preventing adjustment of an operating parameter of a second set of operating parameters of a second allocated resource module where said operating parameter of said second set of operating parameters is the same as an operating parameter of said first set of operating parameters.
  5. 5
The method in accordance w ith claim 2. further comprising an interlock system preventing adjustment of an operating parameter of a second set of operating parameters of a second allocated resource module where said operating parameter of said second set of operating parameters is indirectly related to an operating parameter CA 02493091 2007-08-21 of said first set of operating parameters.
  6. 6
The method in accordance with claim 2. further comprising an interlock system for preventing other users from adjusting operating parameters in other resource modules that could potentially change, directly or indirectly, operating parameters within the checked out resource module, until the original resource module has been released by the present user.
  7. 7
The method in accordance w ith any one of claims I to 6. further comprising remote access for communicating to the control management system.
  8. 8
The method in accordance with any one of claims I to 7. further comprising the step of display ing said at least one set of operating parameters in at least one remote location.
  9. 9
The method in accordance with any one of claims I to 8. wherein the authenticating rules comprise using at least one of (i) a password, (ii) a physical key, (iii) a radio frequency identification device, (iv) a fingerprint device, (v) a retinal scan device:and (vi) a digital software key.
  10. 10
The method in accordance with claim I. wherein the at least one operating model and the at least one set of operating rules form a neural network for controlling the drilling rig.
  11. 11
1 1. The method in accordance w ith any one of claims 1 to 10. w herein the at least one set of operating rules is an expert system.
  12. 12
The method in accordance w ith any one of claims I to II. w herein at least one resource module comprises at least one of:tools control: electronic drilling system: pressure management: solids control: tripping management system: downhole tool control: and downhole Measurement While Drilling (MWD).
  13. 13
The method in accordance w ith any one of claims I to 12. wherein the set of operating parameters control at least one of:top drive: scr controls: drawwork controls;rpm: wob: trq: deltaP: pump strokes: choke control;shaker control: centrifuge control including rpm speed of a centrifuge: chemical additive control: WAB/Surge limits;and sequencing schemes.
  14. 14
The method in accordance w ith any one of claims I to 13. w herein the user is a service contractor, the method further comprising the step of allowing the service contractor to make recommendations for changes to operating parameters from obtained downhole data to achieve wellplan objectives. CA 02493091 2007-08-21
  15. 15
The method in accordance with any one of claims I to 14. wherein said operating rules are related to rig and equipment capabilities and to the well plan objectives
  16. 16
The method in accordance with any one of claims I to 15. wherein said operational rules indicate an out of range status request.
  17. 17
The method in accordance with any one of claims I to 16. w herein said step of providing hierarchical access is carried out using an ARMCS network.
  18. 18
A computer readable medium containing instructions that when executed cause a processor to control operation of a drilling rig having at least one resource module according to the follow ing method, which comprises the steps of:a) programming a control management sy stem with at least one set of operating parameters, said at least one resource module having at least one operating model having at least one set of programmed operating rules related to the at least one set of operating parameters: b) providing access to a plurality of users: c) providing a set of authenticating rules to authenticate at least one user;d) providing hierarchical access to said at least one user to said at least one resource module;e) allow ing said at least one user to input an adjusted value for at least one of the set of operating parameters in the at least one resource module;f) comparing said adjusted value to said at least one set of programmed operating rules and allow ing adjustment if said adjusted value is w ithin said operating rules;g) providing an indication if said adjusted value is not w ithin said operating rules: and h) providing a supervisor override to prevent acceptance of said adjusted value.
