Optimally serving stations on wlans using contention/reservation protocol 802.11e

Abstract

The Wireless LAN includes multiple stations (STAs), mobile orStationary, airlinked to an access point as a Basic Service Set (BSS).A Hybrid Coordinator (HC) is collocated with the access point forallocating the bandwidth for the BSS to using a ControlledContention/Resource Reservation Protocol defined in the IEEEStandard 802.11(e). The HC transmits Contention Control (CC)frames and initiates Controlled Contention Intervals (CCI) having aselected number of slotted intervals. HC receives ResourceReservations (RR) detailing bandwidth needs from the STAcontenders during a specified time interval called the ControlledContention Interval (CCI). Several parameters are installed in eachCC for contention control purpose. The several parameters arecontrolled to optimize efficient use of the wireless medium andreduce access delays for RR frames contending for the wirelessmedium.

CA 02464046 2008-08-14 CLAIMS 1. A method for serving stations on Wireless local area networks using a Controlled Contention/Resource Reservation protocol of the IEEE 802.1 le standard comprising:setting a counter Empty CC to 0;estimating a number of contenders (Cntndrs) according to prior results for the Controlled Contention/Resource Reservation protocol and observed traffic patterns;conducting a first test to determine if the number of contenders is less than 1 ;determining Optimum Controlled Contention Opportunities (CCOPs) based on the estimated number of contenders and approximating a number of slots required to report results to a station as 1 or 2 slots;performing a second test CC_OPs 1, wherein a “yes” condition sets CC OPs to +1 and a “no” condition transfers to a step of conducting a third test;conducting a third test: Empty_CCI Max Empty CCI, wherein Empty CCI is a number of empty Controlled Contention Intervals (CCIs), wherein MaxEmptyCCI is a selected number of Empty CCIs, and wherein a “yes” condition transfers to the step of estimating;and transmitting a Contention Control (CC) frame containing the value of CC_OPs.
