Mapping system for transmission and reception of multiple data types

Abstract

A transmitter transmits successive data fields, and each data field includes a mix of VSB data segments and E-VSB data segments and interleaved portions of maps. The maps define the mixes of VSB data segments and E-VSB data segments in corresponding data fields to b transmitted after the correspondingmaps are transmitted. Prior to interleaving, the maps are encoded. At a receiver, the maps are de-interleaved and decoded so as to derive the mix of VSB and E-VSB data segments defining each of the data fields. The interleaving and de-interleaving have a combined latency of at least L fields. The VSB and E-VSB data segments of each of the data fields are separated in response to the de-interleaved maps.

CA 02461434 2004-03-23 WO 03/028379 PCT/US02/10021 WE CLAIM:1. A data communications method comprising: receiving a map defining a mix of first and second data contained in a second field, wherein the map is distributed throughout a plurality of first fields;receiving the second field after receiving the plurality of first fields;decoding the map distributed throughout the plurality of first fields;and, de-formatting the second field according to the decoded map.
  2. 23
A data communications method comprising:receiving an encoded map, wherein the encoded map defines a mix of first and second data in a field;decoding the encoded map according to a map decoding technique;receiving the field;CA 02461434 2004-03-23 WO 03/028379 PCT/US02/10021 de-formatting the field m accordance with the decoded map in order to determine which data in the field is first data and which data in the field is second data;and, decoding at least one of the first and second data according to a data decoding technique that is different than the map decoding technique.
