Thermal synthesis apparatus and method

Abstract

An apparatus for thermal conversion of one or more reactants to desired end products includes an insulated reactor chamber having a high temperature heater such as a plasma torch at its inlet end and, optionally, a restrictive convergent- divergent nozzle at its outlet end. In a thermal conversion method, reactants are injected upstream from the reactor chamber and thoroughly mixed with the plasma stream before entering the reactor chamber. The reactor chamber has a reaction zone that is maintained at a substantially uniform temperature. The resulting heated gaseous stream is then rapidly cooled by passage through the nozzle, which "freezes" the desired end product(s) in the heated equilibrium reaction stage, or is discharged through an outlet pipe without the convergent-divergent nozzle. The desired end products are then separated from the gaseous stream.

  1. 1
CA 02408994 2006-08-21 What is claimed is:1. A method of converting one or more reactants to at least one desired product, comprising: introducing a reactant stream into an injection line at one end of an axial reactor;independently introducing a stream of heating gas into the injection line for mixture with the reactant stream;substantially thoroughly mixing the reactant stream with the heating gas within the injection line to produce a thoroughly mixed reactant stream prior to entry thereof into a reactor chamber ;and passing the mixed reactant stream axially from the injection line to the reactor chamber;maintaining a volume defined by the reactor chamber at a substantially uniform temperature over the length thereof as the mixed reactant stream passes therethrough;and producing at least one desired end product at a location adjacent an outlet end of the axial reactor.
  2. 27
An apparatus for thermal conversion of one or more reactants to at least one desired product, the apparatus comprising:an axial reactor having an inlet end, an outlet end and a reaction zone therebetween, the axial reactor being configured to maintain the reaction zone at a substantially uniform temperature over the length thereof, wherein the axial reactor is operable under conditions sufficient to effect heating of a reactant stream to a selected reaction temperature at which a stream including at least one desired product is produced at a location at least adjacent the outlet end of the axial reactor;a torch section configured to produce a heating gas upstream from the axial reactor;and an injector section including a heating gas inlet and a reactant inlet, the injector section being sized, located and configured to introduce one or more reactants into the heating gas and to promote substantially thorough mixing of the one or more reactants with the heating gas to produce a stream flowing toward the inlet end of the axial reactor.
