Pivoting, underslung, stowaway, hitch mount

Abstract

A ball hitch system for connecting a trailer to a towing vehicle. The system comprises a trunion (12) adapted to fit in the towing vehicle's receiver. A ball (72) is connected to the trunion through a base (26). Different embodiments may have bases with one or two axis of rotation. In at least two separate embodiments with one axis of rotation, the axis may be either vertical or horizontal. In other embodiments with at least two axis of rotation, the axis of rotation are perpendicular to each other. Various embodiments may have between one (64) to three (120) different sized ball hitches attached with the different sized hitch balls (72) into place as needed. The various embodiments may include locks (32) locking the balls (72 ) into different positions through their respective axis of rotations, one of which may be a storage position.

CA 02389286 2002-04-24 WO 01/32451 PCT/US00/29677 CLAIMS 1. An apparatus for mounting a hitch to a vehicle, the apparatus comprising:a base configured to be connected to the vehicle;a pivot configured to engage the base, the pivot having an axis substantially orthogonal to the longitudinal direction;and a mount pivotably secured to the base by the pivot and configured to selectively pivot between a stowed position and a deployed position,
  2. 6
The apparatus of claim Lfurthercomprisingabeamsecurcdataproximalend thereof to the pivot and supporting, at a distal end thereof, a platform conformed to secure a hitch.
  3. 21
An apparatus comprising:a mount adapted to secure to a vehicle;a platform pivotably secured to the mount for pivoting between a first deployed position and a second stowed position;a turntable pivotably secured to the platform and configured to rotate in a direction orthogonal to the pivoting direction of the platform, an positionable between a first deployable position and a second stowable position;and a first ball hitch and a second ball hitch.
  4. 22
An apparatus for securing a hitch of a towed unit, the apparatus comprising:a mount configured for securement to a vehicle having a longitudinal direction;a turntable pivotably mounted to rotate about a longitudinal axis extending substantially in the longitudinal direction;a first ball having an axial direction, a radial direction, and a first diameter;a threaded fastener integral with the first ball to extend axially therefrom;and -26CA 02389286 2002-04-24 WO 01/32451 PCT/US00/29677 a second ball, positioned coaxially with respect to the first ball, and having a pedestal for receiving the threaded fastener therein.
  5. 27
An apparatus comprising:a first ball;a first shank extending therefrom;a base connected to the shank for supporting the first hitch against radial and axial loading;a pedestal, having proximal and distal ends and being connected at the proximal end to the first shank, for spacing the first shank away from a mounting surface;the pedestal having a pedestal length extending between the proximal and distal ends;and the pedestal, further provided with a threaded chamber extending from the distal end a distance less than the pedestal length for securing the pedestal to a fastener. -27CA 02389286 2002-04-24 WO 01/32451 PCT7US00/29677
  6. 28
An apparatus for securing a hitch of a trailer to a vehicle, the apparatus comprising:a first ball having an axial direction, a radial direction, a first diameter, and a load rating for a load in a radial direction;a first flange portion connected to the first ball and configured to support a radial load corresponding to the load rating;a first neck, substantially solid in a radial direction across a neck diameter and extending axially from the first ball to the first flange portion, the neck diameter being selected to support a radial load corresponding to the load rating and selected to provide relief for movement of a trailer hitch therearound;and a pedestal extending from the first flange portion a distance selected to secure the first neck, free of stress concentrations, to a mounting surface.
  7. 39
A method for balancing load capacity throughout a ball hitch apparatus, the method comprising:providing a first ball connecting to a first shank, a base, and a shaft, extending axially from the base and away from the first ball, for mounting to a supporting deck;providing a second ball connecting to a second shank and a pedestal, the pedestal extending axially away from the second shank and the ball;selecting a depth less than the axial length of the pedestal;and -29WO 01/32451 CA 02389286 2002-04-24 PCT/US00/29677 providing an aperture extending axially the depth into the pedestal and configured to receive and retain the shaft to secure the first ball and second ball on opposite surfaces of a supporting deck.
