Wide area lighting effects system

Abstract

A system and method for providing lighting effects comprises an arrangement of low power lights mounted on a frame having an opening through which a camera can protrude. In one embodiment, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) or light-emitting crystals (LECs) are arranged on the frame in a pattern of concentric circles, with the frame being ring-shaped and having a circular opening through which a camera can protrude, and a mounting bracket and assembly for attaching the frame to a camera. The LEDs or LECs may be electronically controllable so as to provide differing intensity levels, either collectively, individually, or in designated groups, and may be strobed, dimmed or otherwise controlled according to manually selected or programmable patterns.

  1. 1
CA 02385646 2007-07-19 The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:1. A wide area lighting effects system to provide a proper illumination for the lighting of a subject in television, film or still photography, comprising: a portable frame comprising a mounting surface, said frame defining an opening in said mounting surface;a plurality of low power semiconductor lights arranged on said mounting surface, said low power semiconductor lights oriented so as to distribute light over a wide area thereby providing a proper illumination for the lighting of the subject;and a mounting assembly for releasably attaching said frame to a movable and pivotable camera apparatus such that an imaging portion of the camera apparatus is positioned to view through the opening within said frame, whereby said frame follows the movements of the camera apparatus.
  2. 6
The wide area lighting effects system of any one of claims 1 to 5, further comprising a variable control for electronically controlling intensity levels of said low power semiconductor lights. - 30CA 02385646 2007-07-19
  3. 9
The wide area lighting effects system of any one of claims 1 to 8, further comprising a color filter attachable to said frame, said color filter positioned in the path of emitted light of said low power semiconductor lights, whereby a plurality of said low power semiconductor lights are filtered so as to produce colorized light.
  4. 10
The wide area lighting effects system of any one of claims 1 to 9, further comprising a software-programmable processor for controlling the on/off states and light intensity levels of said low power semiconductor lights according to a selectable program.
  5. 12
The wide area lighting effects system of any one of claims 1 to 7, further comprising a plurality of switches connecting a power source to a plurality of groups each comprising one or more of said low power semiconductor lights, and a switch selector whereby the on/off states of said switches are selected, thereby controlling groupwise whether the low power semiconductor lights are on or off.
  6. 13
The wide area lighting effects system of any one of claims 1 to 12, wherein said frame comprises a mounting assembly receptor, and wherein said mounting CA 02385646 2007-07-19 assembly comprises an attachment member adapted to secure to said mounting assembly receptor, and a camera clamp adapted to secure the mounting assembly to the camera apparatus such that the frame can be readily released from the camera apparatus by operation of the camera clamp.
  7. 14
The wide area lighting effects system of any one of claims 1 to 13, wherein said opening is circular in shape.
  8. 16
The wide area lighting effects system of any one of claims 1 to 15, further comprising a battery for supplying power to said low power semiconductor lights.
  9. 17
The wide area lighting effects system of any one of claims 1 to 16, wherein said low power semiconductor lights are configured to provide continuous illumination for the subject.
  10. 18
A method of providing lighting over a subject area, comprising the steps of:arranging a plurality of low power semiconductor lights on a mounting surface of a portable frame, said frame defining an opening in said mounting surface, said low power semiconductor lights oriented so as to distribute light over a wide area thereby providing a proper illumination for the lighting of a subject in television, film or portrait photography;providing a camera mounting assembly attached to said frame;and securably attaching said camera mounting assembly to a movable and pivotable camera apparatus such that an imaging portion of the camera apparatus is positioned to view through the opening within said frame, whereby said frame follows movements of the camera apparatus in tandem therewith, said camera mounting assembly being releasably attachable to said frame.
