Abstract

An electrochromic medium (124) for use in a normally operating electrochromic device (100) comprising an anodic material and a cathodic material wherein both of the anodic and cathodic materials are electroactive and at least one of the anodic and cathodic materials is electrochromic, and additive, and means associated with the additive for maintaining a colorless or nearly colorless electrochromic medium (124) while the electrochromic medium is in a high transmission state relative to an electrochromic medium (124) without the additive.

An electrochromic medium for use in a normally operating electrochromic device, comprising: - an anodic material and a cathodic material, wherein both of the anodic and cathodic materials are electroactive and at least one of the anodic and cathodic materials is electrochromic;and - an additive, wherein the additive is more easily reduced than the cathodic material. 2. The electrochromic medium according to claim 1, wherein the additive substantially precludes the formation of a residual reduced cathodic material while the electrochromic medium is in a high transmission state. 3. The electrochromic medium according to claim 1, wherein the additive comprises an oxidized form of the anodic material. 4. The electrochromic medium according to claim 1, wherein the additive comprises an additional material present in an oxidized form. 5. The electrochromic medium according to claim 1, wherein the additive is selected from the group comprising ferrocinium salts, substituted ferrocinium salts, phenazinium salts, substituted phenazinium salts, and mixtures thereof. 6. The electrochromic medium according to claim 5, wherein the additive is selected from the group comprising di-tert-butyl-diethylferrocinium tetrafluoroborate, (6-(tetra-tert CA 02382001 2002-02-12 WO 01/13169 PCT/US00/22667 butylferrocinium)hexyl)triethylammonium di-tetrafluoroborate, (3 -(tetra-tertbutylferrocinium)propyl)triethylainrnonium di-tetrafluoroborate, 5-methyl-phenazinium tetrafluoroborate, and mixtures thereof. 7. The electrochromic medium according to claim 6, wherein the concentration of the additive ranges from approximately O.OlmM to approximately lOmM. 8. The electrochromic medium according to claim 1, wherein the cathodic material comprises a viologen. 9. The electrochromic medium according to claim 8, wherein the concentration of the cathodic material ranges from approximately ImM to approximately 500mM. 10. The electrochromic medium according to claim 9, wherein the concentration of the cathodic material ranges from approximately 5mM to approximately 50mM. 11. The electrochromic medium according to claim 1, wherein the cathodic material comprises tungsten oxide. 12. The electrochromic medium according to claim 1, wherein the anodic material is selected from the group comprising ferrocene, substituted ferrocenes, substituted ferrocenyl salts, phenazine, substituted phenazines, phenothiazine, substituted phenothiazines, and mixtures thereof. The electrochromic medium according to claim 12, wherein the anodic material is selected from the group comprising di-tert-butyl-diethylferrocene, (6-(tetra-tertbutylferrocenyl)hexyl)triethylammonium tetrafluoroborate, (3-(tetra-tert-butylferrocenyl)propyl)triethylammonium tetrafluoroborate, 5,10-dimethylphenazine, 3,7,10trimethylphenothiazine, and mixtures thereof. 14. The electrochromic medium according to claim 13, wherein the concentration of the anodic material ranges from approximately lmM to approximately 500mM. 15. The electrochromic medium according to claim 14, wherein the concentration of the anodic material ranges from approximately 5mM to approximately 50mM. 16. An electrochromic medium for use in a normally operating electrochromic device, comprising: - an anodic material and a cathodic material, wherein both of the anodic and cathodic materials are electroactive and at least one of the anodic and cathodic materials is electrochromic;and - an additive, wherein the additive comprises a reduced form of the cathodic material. 17. The electrochromic medium according to claim 16, wherein the additive substantially precludes the formation of a residual oxidized anodic material while the electrochromic medium is in a high transmission state. An electrochromic medium for use in a normally operating electrochromic device, comprising: - an anodic material and a cathodic material, wherein both of the anodic and cathodic materials are electroactive and at least one of the anodic and cathodic materials is electrochromic;and - an additive, wherein the additive is more easily oxidized than the anodic material, said additive being selected from the group comprising substituted ferrocenes, substituted ferrocenyl salts, and mixtures thereof. 19. The electrochromic medium according to claim 18, wherein the additive substantially precludes the formation of a residual oxidized anodic material while the electrochromic medium is in a high transmission state. 20. The electrochromic medium according to claim 18, wherein the additive is selected from the group comprising (6-(tetra-tert-butylferrocenyl)hexyl) triethylammonium tetrafluoroborate, (3-(tetra-tert-butylferrocenyl)propyl) triethylammonium tetrafluoroborate, di-tert-butyl-diethylferrocene and mixtures thereof. 21. The electrochromic medium according to claim 20, wherein the concentration of the additive ranges from approximately 0.0ImM to approximately lOmM. 22. The electrochromic medium according to claim 22, wherein the concentration of the cathodic material ranges from approximately ImM to approximately 500mM. 24. The electrochromic medium according to claim 23, wherein the concentration of the cathodic material ranges from approximately 5mM to approximately 50mM. 25. The electrochromic medium according to claim 18, wherein the cathodic material comprises tungsten oxide. 26. The electrochromic medium according to claim 18, wherein the anodic material is selected from the group comprising ferrocene, substituted ferrocenes, substituted ferrocenyl salts, phenazine, substituted phenazines, phenothiazine, substituted phenothiazines, and mixtures thereof. 27. The electrochromic medium according to claim 26, wherein the anodic material is selected from the group comprising di-tert-butyl-diethylferrocene, (6-(tetra-tertbutylferrocenyl)hexyl)triethylammonium tetrafluoroborate, (3 -(tetra-tert-butylferrocenyl)propyl)triethylammonium tetrafluoroborate, 5,10-dimethylphenazine, 3,7,10trimethylphenothiazine, and mixtures thereof. 28. The electrochromic medium according to claim 27, wherein the concentration of the anodic material ranges from approximately ImM to approximately 500mM. The electrochromic medium according to claim 28, wherein the concentration of the anodic material ranges from approximately 5mM to approximately 50mM. 30. An electrochromic medium for use in a normally operating electrochromic device, comprising: - an anodic material and a cathodic material, wherein both of the anodic and cathodic materials are electroactive and at least one of the anodic and cathodic materials is electrochromic;and - an additive, wherein the additive comprises: - a first component that is more easily reduced than the cathodic material;and - a second component that is more easily oxidized than the anodic material. 31. The electrochromic medium according to claim 30, wherein the first component substantially precludes the formation of a residual reduced cathodic material and the second component substantially precludes the formation of a residual oxidized anodic material while the electrochromic medium is in a high transmission state. 32. The electrochromic medium according to claim 30, wherein the first component comprises an oxidized form of the anodic material. 33. The electrochromic medium according to claim 30, wherein the first component comprises an additional electroactive material present in an oxidized form. The electrochromic medium according to claim 30, wherein the first component is selected from the group comprising ferrocinium salts, substituted ferrocinium salts, phenazinium salts, substituted phenazinium salts, and mixtures thereof. 35. The electrochromic medium according to claim 34, wherein the additive is selected from the group comprising di-tert-butyl-diethylferrocinium tetrafluoroborate, (6-(tetra-tertbutylferrocinium)hexyl)triethylammonium di-tetrafluoroborate, (3 -(tetra-tertbutylferrocinium)propyl)triethyl ammonium di-tetrafluoroborate, 5-methylphenazinium tetrafluoroborate, and mixtures thereof. 36. The electrochromic medium according to claim 35, wherein the concentration of the first component ranges from approximately O.OlmM to approximately lOmM. 37. The electrochromic medium according to claim 30, wherein the second component is selected from the group comprising substituted phenazines, substituted ferrocenes, substituted ferrocenyl salts, and mixtures thereof. 38. The electrochromic medium according to claim 37, wherein the second component is selected from the group comprising 5-methylphenazine, (6-(tetra-tertbutylferrocenyl)hexyl)triethylammonium tetrafluoroborate, (3 -(tetra-tertbutylferrocenyl)propyl)triethylammonium tetrafluoroborate, di-tert-butyl-diethylferrocene and mixtures thereof. The electrochromic medium according to claim 38, wherein the concentration of the second component ranges from approximately O.OlmM to approximately lOmM. 40. The electrochromic medium according to claim 30, wherein the cathodic material comprises a viologen. 41. The electrochromic medium according to claim 40, wherein the concentration of the cathodic material ranges from approximately ImM to approximately 500mM. 42. The electrochromic medium according to claim 41, wherein the concentration of the cathodic material ranges from approximately 5mM to approximately 50mM. 43. The electrochromic medium according to claim 30, wherein the cathodic material comprises tungsten oxide. 44. The electrochromic medium according to claim 30, wherein the anodic material is selected from the group comprising ferrocene, substituted ferrocenes, substituted ferrocenyl salts, phenazine, substituted phenazines, phenothiazine, substituted phenothiazines, and mixtures thereof. 45. The electrochromic medium according to claim 45, wherein the concentration of the anodic material ranges from approximately ImM to approximately 500mM. 47. The electrochromic medium according to claim 46, wherein the concentration of the anodic material ranges from approximately 5mM to approximately 50mM. 48. An electrochromic medium for use in a normally operating electrochromic device, comprising: - an anodic material and a cathodic material, wherein both of the anodic and cathodic materials are electroactive and at least one of the anodic and cathodic materials is electrochromic;- an additive;and - means associated with the additive for maintaining a nearly colorless electrochromic medium while the electrochromic medium is in a high transmission state relative to an electrochromic medium without the additive. 49. The electrochromic medium according to claim 48, wherein the nearly colorless electrochromic medium maintaining means comprises the additive being more easily reduced than the cathodic material. The electrochromic medium according to claim 48, wherein the nearly colorless electrochromic medium maintaining means comprises the additive being a reduced form of the cathodic material. 51. The electrochromic medium according to claim 48, wherein the nearly colorless electrochromic medium maintaining means comprises the additive being more easily oxidized than the anodic material, said additive being selected from the group comprising substituted ferrocenes, substituted ferrocenyl salts, and mixtures thereof. 52. The electrochromic medium according to claim 48, wherein the nearly colorless electrochromic medium maintaining means comprises the additive having a first component and a second component wherein, - the first component is more easily reduced than the cathodic material;and - the second component is more easily oxidized than the anodic material. 53. An electrochromic device comprising: - at least one substantially transparent substrate;and - an electrochromic medium according to claims 1, 16, 18, 30, or 48 associated with the at least one substantially transparent substrate. 54. The electrochromic device according to claim 54, wherein the device is an electrochromic window. 56. The electrochromic device according to claim 54, wherein the second substrate is plated with a reflective material. 57. The electrochromic device according to claim 56, wherein the reflective material is selected from the group comprising chromium, rhodium, silver, alloys of the same, and mixtures thereof. 58. The electrochromic device according to claim 57, wherein the device is a vehicular electrochromic mirror. 59. An electrochromic process comprising the steps of: - providing an electrochromic medium which comprises an anodic material and a cathodic material, wherein both of the anodic and cathodic materials are electroactive and at least one of the anodic and cathodic materials is electrochromic and an additive;- cycling the electrochromic medium between a high transmission state and a low transmission state;and - maintaining a nearly colorless electrochromic medium during said high transmission state relative to an electrochromic medium without the additive. The electrochromic medium according to claim 60, wherein the color-stabilizing additive comprises an oxidized form of the anodic material. 62. The electrochromic medium according to claim 60, wherein the color-stabilizing additive comprises an additional material present in an oxidized form. 63. The electrochromic medium according to claim 60, wherein the color-stabilizing additive is selected from the group comprising ferrocinium salts, substituted ferrocinium salts, phenazinium salts, substituted phenazinium salts, and mixtures thereof. 20 64. The electrochromic medium according to claim 63, wherein the color-stabilizing additive is selected from the group comprising di-tert-butyl-diethylferrocinium tetrafluoroborate, (6-(tetra-tert-butylferrocinium)hexyl)triethylammonium di-tetrafluoroborate, (3-(tetra-tert-butylferrocinium)propyl)triethylammoniumdi-tetrafluoroborate, 5-methyl-phenazinium tetrafluoroborate, and mixtures thereof. 65. The electrochromic medium according to claim 60, wherein the concentration of the additive ranges from approximately 0.01 mM to approximately 10 mM. 66. The electrochromic medium according to claim 60, wherein the cathodic material 30 comprises a viologen. 67. The electrochromic medium according to claim 60, wherein the concentration of the CA 02382001 2002-02-12 cathodic material ranges from approximately 1 mM to approximately 500 mM. 68. The electrochromic medium according to claim 60, wherein the concentration of the cathodic material ranges from approximately 5 mM to approximately 50 mM. 69. The electrochromic medium according to claim 60, wherein the cathodic material comprises tungsten oxide. 70. The electrochromic medium according to claim 60, wherein the anodic material is selected from the group comprising ferrocene, substituted ferrocenes, substituted ferrocenyl salts, phenazine, substituted phenazines, phenothiazine, substituted phenothiazines, and mixtures thereof. 71. The electrochromic medium according to claim 60, wherein the concentration of the anodic material ranges from approximately 1 mM to approximately 500 mM. 72. The electrochromic medium according to claim 60, wherein the concentration of the anodic material ranges from approximately 5 mM to approximately 50 mM. 73. An electrochromic medium for use in a normally operating electrochromic device, comprising: (a) an anodic material and a cathodic material, wherein both of the anodic and cathodic materials are electroactive and at least one of the anodic and cathodic materials is electrochromic;and (b) a color-stabilizing additive, wherein the color-stabilizing additive is more easily oxidized than the anodic material, and wherein the color-stabilizing additive is not strongly colored. 74. The electrochromic medium according to claim 73, wherein the color-stabilizing additive is selected from the group comprising substituted ferrocenes, substituted ferrocenyl salts, and mixtures thereof. The electrochromic medium according to claim 73, wherein the concentration of the additive ranges from approximately 0.01 mM to approximately 10 mM. 77. The electrochromic medium according to claim 73, wherein the cathodic material comprises a viologen. 78. The electrochromic medium according to claim 73, wherein the concentration of the cathodic material ranges from approximately 1 mM to approximately 500 mM. 79. The electrochromic medium according to claim 73, wherein the concentration of the cathodic material ranges from approximately 5 mM to approximately 50 mM. 80. The electrochromic medium according to claim 73, wherein the cathodic material comprises tungsten oxide. 81. The electrochromic medium according to claim 73, wherein the anodic material is selected from the group comprising ferrocene, substituted ferrocenes, substituted ferrocenyl salts, phenazine, substituted phenazines, phenothiazine, substituted phenothiazines, and mixtures thereof. 82. The electrochromic medium according to claim 73, wherein the concentration of the anodic material ranges from approximately 1 mM to approximately 500 mM. 83. The electrochromic device according to claim 85, wherein the device is an electrochromic window. 87. The electrochromic device according to claim 85, wherein the second substrate is plated with a reflective material. 88. The electrochromic device according to claim 87, wherein the reflective material is selected from the group comprising chromium, rhodium, silver, alloys of the same, and mixtures thereof. 89. The electrochromic device according to claim 90, wherein the electrochromic device exhibits an absolute value of Aa* of less than 2.00 after being exposed to an autoclave pressurized to 400 p.s.i. with oxygen for approximately 2,000 hours at ambient temperature. 92. An electrochromic device, comprising:(a) a first substantially transparent substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(b) a second substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(c) an electrochromic medium contained within a chamber positioned between the first and second substrates which comprises: (1) a solvent;(2) a cathodic electroactive material;(3) an anodic electroactive material, wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic electroactive materials is electrochromic;and (4) a color-stabilizing additive;and (d) wherein the electrochromic device exhibits an absolute value of Ab* of less than 6.00 after being exposed to an autoclave pressurized to 400 p.s.i. with oxygen for approximately 2,000 hours at ambient temperature. The electrochromic device according to claim 92, wherein the electrochromic device exhibits an absolute value of Ab* of less than 3.00 after being exposed to an autoclave pressurized to 400 p.s.i. with oxygen for approximately 2,000 hours at ambient temperature. 94. An electrochromic device, comprising: (a) a first substantially transparent substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(b) a second substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(c) an electrochromic medium contained within a chamber positioned between the first and second substrates which comprises: (1) a solvent;(2) a cathodic electroactive material;(3) an anodic electroactive material, wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic electroactive materials is electrochromic;and (4) a color-stabilizing additive;and (d) wherein the electrochromic device exhibits an absolute value of ΔΕ of less than 9.00 after being exposed to an autoclave pressurized to 400 p.s.i. with oxygen for approximately 2,000 hours at ambient temperature. 95. An electrochromic device, comprising: (a) a first substantially transparent substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(b) a second substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(c) an electrochromic medium contained within a chamber positioned between the first and second substrates which comprises: (1) a solvent;(2) a cathodic electroactive material;(3) an anodic electroactive material, wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic electroactive materials is electrochromic;and (4) a color-stabilizing additive;and CA 02382001 2002-09-06 (d) wherein the electrochromic device exhibits an absolute value of ΔΥ of less than 7.50 after being exposed to an autoclave pressurized to 400 p.s.i. with oxygen for approximately 2,000 hours at ambient temperature. 96. The electrochromic device according to claim 95, wherein the electrochromic device exhibits an absolute value of ΔΥ of less than 5.00 after being exposed to an autoclave pressurized to 400 p.s.i. with oxygen for approximately 2,000 hours at ambient temperature. 97. An electrochromic device, comprising: (a) a first substantially transparent substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(b) a second substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(c) an electrochromic medium contained within a chamber positioned between the first and second substrates which comprises: (1) a solvent;(2) a cathodic electroactive material;(3) an anodic electroactive material, wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic electroactive materials is electrochromic;and (4) a color-stabilizing additive;and (d) wherein the electrochromic device exhibits an absolute value of Aa* of less than 2.00 after being exposed to 85 degrees centigrade for approximately 2,000 hours. 98. An electrochromic device, comprising: (a) a first substantially transparent substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(b) a second substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(c) an electrochromic medium contained within a chamber positioned between the first and second substrates which comprises: (1) a solvent;(2) a cathodic electroactive material;(3) an anodic electroactive material, wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic electroactive materials is electrochromic;and (4) a color-stabilizing additive;and CA 02382001 2002-09-06 (d) wherein the electrochromic device exhibits an absolute value of Ab* of less than 10.00 after being exposed to 85 degrees centigrade for approximately 2,000 hours. 99. The electrochromic device according to claim 98, wherein the electrochromic device 5 exhibits an absolute value of Ab* of less than 5.00 after being exposed to 85 degrees centigrade for approximately 2,000 hours. 100. The electrochromic device according to claim 98, wherein the electrochromic device exhibits an absolute value of Ab* of less than 1.00 after being exposed to 85 degrees 10 centigrade for approximately 2,000 hours. 101. An electrochromic device, comprising: (a) a first substantially transparent substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;15 (b) a second substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(c) an electrochromic medium contained within a chamber positioned between the first and second substrates which comprises: (1) a solvent;(2) a cathodic electroactive material;20 (3) an anodic electroactive material, wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic electroactive materials is electrochromic;and (4) a color-stabilizing additive;and (d) wherein the electrochromic device exhibits an absolute value of ΔΕ of less than 12.00 after being exposed to 85 degrees centigrade for approximately 2,000 hours. 102. The electrochromic device according to claim 101, wherein the electrochromic device exhibits an absolute value of ΔΕ of less than 5.00 after being exposed to 85 degrees centigrade for approximately 2,000 hours. 30 103. The electrochromic device according to claim 101, wherein the electrochromic device exhibits an absolute value of ΔΕ of less than 2.00 after being exposed to 85 degrees centigrade for approximately 2,000 hours. An electrochromic device, comprising: (a) a first substantially transparent substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(b) a second substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(c) an electrochromic medium contained within a chamber positioned between the first and second substrates which comprises: (1) a solvent;(2) a cathodic electroactive material;(3) an anodic electroactive material, wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic electroactive materials is electrochromic;and (4) a color-stabilizing additive;and (d) wherein the electrochromic device exhibits an absolute value of ΔΥ of less than 10.00 after being exposed to 85 degrees centigrade for approximately 2,000 hours. 105. The electrochromic device according to claim 104, wherein the electrochromic device exhibits an absolute value of ΔΥ of less than 5.00 after being exposed to 85 degrees centigrade for approximately 2,000 hours. 106. The electrochromic device according to claim 104, wherein the electrochromic device exhibits an absolute value of ΔΥ of less than 1.00 after being exposed to 85 degrees centigrade for approximately 2,000 hours. 107. An electrochromic device, comprising: (a) a first substantially transparent substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(b) a second substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(c) an electrochromic medium contained within a chamber positioned between the first and second substrates which comprises: (1) a solvent;(2) a cathodic electroactive material;(3) an anodic electroactive material, wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic electroactive materials is electrochromic;and CA 02382001 2002-09-06 (4) a color-stabilizing additive;and (d) wherein the electrochromic device exhibits a reduction in the absolute value of Aa* of at least 60% after being exposed to an autoclave pressurized to 400 p.s.i. with oxygen for approximately 2,000 hours at ambient temperature relative to the same device without the color-stabilizing additive. 108. An electrochromic device, comprising: (a) a first substantially transparent substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(b) a second substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(c) an electrochromic medium contained within a chamber positioned between the first and second substrates which comprises: (1) a solvent;(2) a cathodic electroactive material;(3) an anodic electroactive material, wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic electroactive materials is electrochromic;and (4) a color-stabilizing additive;and (d) wherein the electrochromic device exhibits a reduction in the absolute value of Ab* of at least 20% after being exposed to an autoclave pressurized to 400 p.s.i. with oxygen for approximately 2,000 hours at ambient temperature relative to the same device without the color-stabilizing additive. 109. The electrochromic device according to claim 108, wherein the electrochromic device exhibits a reduction in the absolute value of Ab* of at least 40% after being exposed to an autoclave pressurized to 400 p.s.i. with oxygen for approximately 2,000 hours at ambient temperature relative to the same device without the color-stabilizing additive. 110. The electrochromic device according to claim 108, wherein the electrochromic device exhibits a reduction in the absolute value of Ab* of at least 60% after being exposed to an autoclave pressurized to 400 p.s.i. with oxygen for approximately 2,000 hours at ambient temperature relative to the same device without the color-stabilizing additive. 111. An electrochromic device, comprising: CA 02382001 2002-09-06 (a) a first substantially transparent substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(b) a second substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(c) an electrochromic medium contained within a chamber positioned between the first and second substrates which comprises: (1) a solvent;(2) a cathodic electroactive material;(3) an anodic electroactive material, wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic electroactive materials is electrochromic;and (4) a color-stabilizing additive;and (d) wherein the electrochromic device exhibits a reduction in the absolute value of ΔΕ of at least 20% after being exposed to an autoclave pressurized to 400 p.s.i. with oxygen for approximately 2,000 hours at ambient temperature relative to the same device without the color-stabilizing additive. 112. The electrochromic device according to claim 111, wherein the electrochromic device exhibits a reduction in the absolute value of ΔΕ of at least 40% after being exposed to an autoclave pressurized to 400 p.s.i. with oxygen for approximately 2,000 hours at ambient temperature relative to the same device without the color-stabilizing additive. 113. The electrochromic device according to claim 111, wherein the electrochromic device exhibits a reduction in the absolute value of ΔΕ of at least 50% after being exposed to an autoclave pressurized to 400 p.s.i. with oxygen for approximately 2,000 hours at ambient temperature relative to the same device without the color-stabilizing additive. 114. An electrochromic device, comprising: (a) a first substantially transparent substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(b) a second substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(c) an electrochromic medium contained within a chamber positioned between the first and second substrates which comprises: (1) a solvent;(2) a cathodic electroactive material;CA 02382001 2002-09-06 (3) an anodic electroactive material, wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic electroactive materials is electrochromic;and (4) a color-stabilizing additive;and (d) wherein the electrochromic device exhibits a reduction in the absolute value of Aa* of at least 75% after being exposed to 85 degrees centigrade for approximately 2,000 hours at ambient temperature relative to the same device without the colorstabilizing additive. 115. An electrochromic device, comprising: (a) a first substantially transparent substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(b) a second substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(c) an electrochromic medium contained within a chamber positioned between the first and second substrates which comprises: (1) a solvent;(2) a cathodic electroactive material;(3) an anodic electroactive material, wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic electroactive materials is electrochromic;and (4) a color-stabilizing additive;and (d) wherein the electrochromic device exhibits a reduction in the absolute value of Ab* of at least 20% after being exposed to 85 degrees centigrade for approximately 2,000 hours at ambient temperature relative to the same device without the colorstabilizing additive. 116. The electrochromic device according to claim 115, wherein the electrochromic device exhibits a reduction in the absolute value of Ab* of at least 50% after being exposed to 85 degrees centigrade for approximately 2,000 hours at ambient temperature relative to the same device without the color-stabilizing additive. 117. The electrochromic device according to claim 115, wherein the electrochromic device exhibits a reduction in the absolute value of Ab* of at least 75% after being exposed to 85 degrees centigrade for approximately 2,000 hours at ambient temperature relative to the same device without the color-stabilizing additive. The electrochromic device according to claim 118, wherein the electrochromic device exhibits a reduction in the absolute value of ΔΕ of at least 50% after being exposed to 85 degrees centigrade for approximately 2,000 hours at ambient temperature relative to the same device without the color-stabilizing additive. 120. The electrochromic device according to claim 118, wherein the electrochromic device exhibits a reduction in the absolute value of ΔΕ of at least 75% after being exposed to 85 degrees centigrade for approximately 2,000 hours at ambient temperature relative to the same device without the color-stabilizing additive. 121. An electrochromic device, comprising: (a) a first substantially transparent substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(b) a second substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(c) an electrochromic medium contained within a chamber positioned between the first and second substrates which comprises: CA 02382001 2002-09-06 (1) a solvent;(2) a cathodic electroactive material;(3) an anodic electroactive material, wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic electroactive materials is electrochromic;and (4) a color-stabilizing additive, wherein the color-stabilizing additive is electroactive within a normal operating voltage of the electrochromic device;and (d) means associated with the color-stabilizing additive for maintaining an at least nearly colorless electrochromic device while the electrochromic device is in an open circuit state relative to the same device without the color-stabilizing additive. 122. The electrochromic device according to claim 121, wherein said electrochromic medium comprises a viscosity modifier. 123. The electrochromic device according to claim 121, wherein said electrochromic medium comprises a free-standing gel. 124. The electrochromic device according to claim 121, wherein said electrochromic medium comprises a crosslinked polymer matrix. 125. An electrochromic device, comprising: (a) a first substantially transparent substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(b) a second substrate having an electrically conductive material associated therewith;(c) an electrochromic medium contained within a chamber positioned between the first and second substrates which comprises: (1) a solvent;(2) a cathodic electroactive material;(3) an anodic electroactive material, wherein at least one of the anodic and cathodic electroactive materials is electrochromic;and (4) a color-stabilizing additive, wherein the color-stabilizing additive is electroactive within a normal operating voltage of the electrochromic device;and CA 02382001 2002-09-06 (d) means associated with the additive for maintaining an at least nearly colorless electrochromic device while the electrochromic device is in a zero potential state relative to the same device without the color-stabilizing additive. 5 126. The electrochromic device according to claim 125, wherein said electrochromic medium comprises a viscosity modifier. 127. The electrochromic device according to claim 125, wherein said electrochromic medium comprises a free-standing gel. 128. The electrochromic device according to claim 125, wherein said electrochromic medium comprises a crosslinked polymer matrix.
