Penetrable cap and fluid transfer device for use therewith

Abstract

The present invention relates to a cap which can form an essentially leak-proof seal with a vessel capable of receiving fluid specimens for clinical analysis and diagnosis. To minimize potentially contaminating contact between the fluid specimen and humans or the environment, the present invention features a cap which is penetrable by a plastic pipette tip or other fluid transfer device, and may include a plurality of striations which were discovered to further improve penetrability of the cap. In this way, substances can be dispensed into or withdrawn from the vessel without having to physically separate the cap from the vessel. Also featured are fluid transfer devices having rib structures which aid in improving the penetration and/or strength characteristics of standard fluid transfer devices (e.g., pipettes) and which aid in creating air gaps for venting air from the interior of a collection device to prevent or minimize the release of fluid sample in the form of an aerosol or bubbles.

CA 02373572 2008-03-14 What we claim is:1. A cap comprising: an annular top wall having an opening formed therein;and a generally conical inner wall positioned beneath the opening and interrelated to the top wall, wherein the inner wall includes a plurality of radially extending striations.
  2. 5
The cap of any one of claims 1 to 4 further comprising an upper annular wall extending upward from and generally perpendicular to the top wall.
  3. 7
The cap of any one of claims 1 to 6 further comprising a wick contained within the cap.
  4. 10
The cap of any one of claims 7 to 9, wherein the combined force needed to penetrate the wick and the inner wall with a plastic pipette tip is less than about 10 pounds force.
  5. 11
The cap of any one of claims 7 to 9, wherein the combined force needed to penetrate the wick and the inner wall with a plastic pipette tip is less than about 7 pounds force.
  6. 12
The cap of any one of claims 7 to 9, wherein the combined force needed to penetrate the wick and the inner wall with a plastic pipette tip is less than about 4.5 pounds force.
  7. 13
The cap of any one of claims 1 to 12, wherein the inner wall has an angle of from about 25° to about 65° relative to the longitudinal axis of the cap.
  8. 14
The cap of any one of claims 1 to 13, wherein each of the striations extends from a start-point at or near an apex of the inner wall.
  9. 15
The cap of any one of claims 1 to 14, wherein the thickness ratio between nonstriated and striated portions of the inner wall is in the range of about 10:1 to about 1.25:1.
  10. 17
The cap of any one of claims 1 to 16, wherein the striations are formed on an inner surface, an outer surface or both the inner and outer surfaces of the inner wall. CA 02373572 2008-03-14
  11. 18
The cap of any one of claims 1 to 17, wherein the inner wall has between 3 and 12 of the striations.
  12. 19
The cap of any one of claims 1 to 18, wherein each of the striations comprises a groove in the inner wall.
  13. 20
The cap of any one of claims 1 to 19 further comprising one or more radially extending ribs formed on an inner surface of the inner wall, each rib being positioned between a pair of adjacent striations.
  14. 21
The cap of any one of claims 1 to 20, wherein an inner surface of the inner wall is at least partially coated with a lubricant.

  19. 26
A method for obtaining a fluid sample from a fluid-holding vessel having a cap secured to an open end thereof, said method comprising the steps of:a) penetrating a surface of the cap with a fluid transfer device, wherein the fluid transfer device includes one or more ribs extending outwardly from an outer surface thereof;b) forming one or more air passageways between the cap and the fluid transfer device, wherein at least one of the air passageways is formed adjacent one of the ribs of the fluid transfer device;c) drawing at least a portion of the sample into the fluid transfer device;and d) removing the fluid transfer device from the vessel.
  20. 30
The method of any one of claims 26 to 29, wherein the cap contains a wick for limiting the release of an aerosol from the vessel during the penetrating step.
  21. 33
The method of any one of claims 26 to 32, wherein the fluid transfer device includes one or more grooves recessed from an outer surface thereof, and wherein at least one air passageway is formed between at least one of the grooves and the surface of the cap during the penetrating step.
