Inventoriable-object control and tracking system

Abstract

An inventoriable-object control and tracking system comprising an object assembly having an electronic device with a unique electronically-readable identification code, which is connected to an inventoriable-object to enable control over access to the object and tracking of the object to identify a user in possession of the object. The system includes a row and column matrix of electrical connectors located offset from a panel defining a corresponding row and column matrix of polarized slots for receipt of a plurality of object identification assemblies in a single orientation. Each connector of a matrix of electrical connectors comprises a pair of opposed, spring contacts having independently-deflectable portions to insure proper electrical contact with an electric device of each object identification assembly. The system also includes a local controller connected to the matrix of electrical connector and to a remote controller.

  2. 13
A system for storing and tracking objects, said system comprising:a plurality of tags each associated with an object to be tracked, each of said tags being provided with a readable memory device storing a code identifying said tag and thus identifying the object to be tracked;a cabinet;a drawer in said cabinet for containing a plurality of said tags;a top panel in said drawer, said top panel being formed with an array of slots each for removably receiving at least a portion of a tag;a backplane in said drawer spaced from said top panel;an array of connectors mounted to said backplane, each of said connectors being aligned with a corresponding slot in said top panel and being configured to couple with the readable memory device of a tag when the tag is received in said corresponding slot;and a controller coupled to said array of connectors for reading and processing the codes of tags disposed in said slots for determining the absence or presence and location -46CA 02307939 2002-08-16 of tags in said drawer.
  3. 19
A container assembly for use in an object tracking system for tracking objects inserted in and removed from -47CA 02307939 2002-08-16 said container assembly, said container assembly comprising a frame defining an interior compartment, a panel in said interior compartment, said panel being formed with an array of receptacles configured to removably receive objects to be tracked, a backplane in said interior compartment spaced from said panel, and an array of couplers mounted to said backplane and aligned with said array of receptacles for coupling with objects inserted in said receptacles, said array of couplers interacting with objects inserted in said receptacles for transmitting information from said objects to a controller of the object tracking system.
  4. 21
In an object tracking system having a container for receiving and storing tags associated with objects to be tracked, a code stored on each of said tags identifying the tag and thus identifying the object associated with the tag, and a controller coupled to said container for reading and processing said codes as said tags are inserted in and removed from said container, the improvement comprising a panel in said container, said panel having a array of receptacles configured to receive tags inserted in said container, a backplane in said container spaced from said panel, and an array of connectors mounted to said backplane, each of said array of connectors being aligned with a corresponding one of said receptacles and being configured to couple to the stored code on a tag inserted in the receptacle for transmitting the code to said controller.
  5. 25
A system for tracking objects, said system comprising a plurality of units each associated with an object to be tracked, memory means on each unit for storing a code identifying the unit and the object associated therewith, a container for receiving and storing units, a top panel in said container formed with an array of receptacles configured to receive units to be stored on said container, a backplane in said container spaced from said top panel, and means on said backplane for receiving codes from units located in said receptacles to determine at least the absence or presence of units within said container.
  6. 27
An object tracking system comprising:a plurality of tags each associated with an object to be tracked and each having a depending tongue with opposed side faces;a touch memory device attached to the tongue of each of said tags, each touch memory device storing a code identifying its corresponding tag;each of said touch memory devices protruding from one side face of the tongue of its corresponding tag a distance greater than from the other side face thereof;a storage unit for receiving and storing said plurality of tags;said storage unit having a plurality of slots, each slot being asymmetrically profiled to allow the tongue and touch memory device of one of said tags to pass through said slot in one orientation of said tag but to prevent the tongue and touch memory device from passing through said slot in other orientations of said tag;a sensor associated with each of said slots for engaging the touch memory device on the tongue of a tag inserted through said slot for accessing the code stored in said touch memory device;and a controller coupled to said sensors for receiving codes and processing the received codes to determine the absence and presence of tags in the storage unit.
  7. 32
A system for tracking and controlling access to a plurality of keys, said system comprising:a plurality of tags each having a first end and a second end and opposed side faces;attachment means on one end of each tag for attaching keys to be tracked;a memory device on the other end of each tag, each memory device protruding a greater distance from one side face of said tag than from the other side face of said tag, each memory device storing a code identifying said tag and thus identifying keys attached thereto;a container for receiving and storing tags and their keys;a panel in said container, said panel being formed with an array of slots, said slots for receiving the ends of tags bearing said memory devices, each of said slots being configured with a bulge along one side such that the ends of tags that bear memory devices may be inserted through the slots in one orientation of said tags being prevented from passing through the slots in other orientations of said tags;an array of sensors in each container, each sensor corresponding to one of said slots for reading the code from a memory device when the tag bearing the memory device is -51CA 02307939 2002-08-16 inserted in said slot;and a controller coupled to said sensors for receiving codes read by said sensors and determining the absence or presence of tags and their keys within said container.
