Self-encoding fiber optic sensor

Abstract

A microsphere-based analyticchemistry system is disclosed in whichself-encoding microspheres havingdistinct characteristic optical responsesignatures to specific target analytesmay be mixed together while theability is retained to identify the sensortype and location of each sensor in arandom dispersion of large numbrs ofsuch sensors in a sensor array using anoptically interrogatable encoding scheme. An optical fiber bundle sensor is alsodisclosed in which individual microspheresensors are disposed in microwells ata distal end of the fiber bundle and areoptically coupled to discrete fibers orgroups of fibers within the bundle. Theidentifies of the individual sensors inthe array are self-encoded by exposingthe array to a reference analyte whileilluminating the away with excitationlight energy. A single sensor arraymay carry thousands of discrete sensingelements whose combined signal providesfor substantial improvements in sensordetection limits, response times and signal-to-noise ratios.
