Soft tissue coagulation probe

Abstract

A soft tissue coagulation probe (250), comprising: a relatively short shaft (254) defining a distal end and a proximal end; a handle (266) associated with the proximal end of the shaft (254); and at least two spaced soft tissue coagulation electrodes (294) associated with the shaft (254) and located in spaced relation to the handle (266), the respective size and spacing of the at least two soft tissue coagulation electrodes (294) being such that simultaneous transmission of energy thereby to an indifferent electrode (519) will produce an area of coagulated tissue that spans the at least two soft tissue coagulation electrodes (294).

  1. 1
CA 02305525 2007-04-20 77742-21 CLAIMS :1. A soft tissue coagulation probe comprising: a handle;an electrode support assembly including an electrically non-conductive outer surface;at least two spaced soft tissue coagulation electrodes fixedly supported on the electrically non-conductive outer surface of the electrode support assembly, the respective size and spacing of the at least two soft tissue coagulation electrodes being such that simultaneous transmission of energy thereby to an indifferent electrode will produce an area of coagulated tissue that spans the at least two soft tissue coagulation electrodes;and a relatively short malleable shaft extending from the handle to the electrode support assembly, said malleable shaft having a bending modulus of between approximately 3 lb.-in. 2 (86 N-cm 2 ) and approximately 50 lb.-in. 2 (1435 N-cm 2 ) , wherein the bending modulus is the product of the modulus of elasticity and the moment of inertia of the shaft.
  2. 22
A soft tissue coagulation probe as claimed in 5 claim 1, further comprising:a coupling device including a base member adapted to be removably secured to a first portion of the shaft and an engagement device connected to the base member and adapted to be removably secured to a second portion of the 10 shaft;wherein the shaft defines a loop when the first portion is secured to the base member and the second portion is secured to the coupling device.
  3. 23
A soft tissue coagulation probe as claimed in 15 claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the electrode support assembly is more flexible than the malleable shaft.
