Expandable stent

Abstract

An expandable stent comprising a proximal end and a distal end in communication with one another, a tubular wall disposed between the proximal end and the distal end, the tubular wall having a longitudinal axis and a porous surface defined by a plurality of interconnected struts, the interconnected struts comprising a gradi-ent of strut thickness from a first end to a second end of the tubular wall, the stent being expandable from a first, contracted position to a second, expanded position upon the application of a radially outward force on the stent. The stent is ideally suited for applications in which a tortuous pathway must be followed to the stenosis or blockage and in which high radial rigidity of the expanded stent is required -- e.g., the treatment of ostial stenosis.

CA 02295682 2009-12-15 What is claimed is:1. An expandable stent comprising a proximal end and a distal end in communication with one another, a tubular wall disposed between the proximal end and the distal end, the tubular wall having a longitudinal axis and a porous surface defined by a plurality of interconnected struts, the interconnected struts defining a plurality of circumferentially disposed rings of a repeating pattern, adjacent circumferentially disposed rings of the repeating pattern comprising a gradient of stmt thickness, the stent being expandable from a first, contracted position to a second, expanded position upon the application of a radially outward force on the stent;wherein the axially adjacent circumferentially disposed rings of the repeating pattern comprise a gradient of strut circumferential thickness manifested in only a single direction between opposed ends of the stent.
  2. 2
The stent defined in Claim 1, wherein the gradient of strut circumferential thickness comprises a change in circumferential thickness of struts between adjacent circumferentially disposed rings of the repeating pattern.
  3. 3
The stent defined in Claim 2, wherein the gradient of strut thickness is manifested between all struts in adjacent circumferentially disposed rings of the repeating pattern.
  4. 4
The stent defined in Claim 2, wherein the gradient of strut thickness is manifested between a portion of struts in adjacent circumferentially disposed rings of the repeating pattern.
  5. 5
The stent defined in any one of Claims 1-4, wherein the repeating pattern comprises a first repeating pattern.
  6. 6
