Abstract

A method of providing a service over a plurality of terminals connected over a network comprises determining resources required for a service to be provided, determining resources currently available at each terminal, comparing the required resources with the available resources, and controlling the service provided at each terminal as a result of the comparison.

    CLAIMS :1. Control apparatus for controlling the transfer of information to an information processing apparatus, the 5 control apparatus comprising: first determining means for determining resources required at the information processing apparatus to process the information;monitoring means for monitoring the resources 10 currently available at the information processing apparatus ;second determining means for determining the maximum resources of the information processing apparatus which can be made available for the processing of the 15 information if the processing of the information is given resources allocated to other processing operations by said information processing apparatus;comparing means for comparing the resources required with the resources currently available at the information 20 processing apparatus and the maximum resources- of the information processing apparatus;and control means for controlling the transfer of information to the information processing apparatus in accordance with the result of the comparison.

Control apparatus according to claim 14, including means for detecting errors during the transference and/or processing of the information, wherein if a format of the information is available which requires less resources, said control means is adapted to change the format of the information transferred to the format requiring less resources in response to the means for detecting errors.

    16. Control apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 10, 12 or 13, wherein said control means is adapted to adaptively control the format of the information transferred in dependence upon the result of the comparison .

    17. Control apparatus according to claim 16, wherein said control means is adapted to change the format of the information transferred to a format which requires more resources which can be met by the resources detected as being currently available.

A method of controlling the transfer of information to an information processing apparatus, the method comprising:a first determining step of determining resources required at the information processing apparatus to process the information;a second determining step of determining the maximum resources of the information processing apparatus which can be made available for the processing of the information if the processing of the information is given resources allocated to other processing operations by said information processing apparatus;a monitoring step of monitoring the resources currently available at the information processing apparatus ;a comparing step of comparing the resources required with the resources currently available at the information processing apparatus and the maximum resources of the information processing apparatus;and a control step of controlling the transfer of information to the information processing apparatus in accordance with the result of the comparison step. A method according to claim 19, including the step of indicating to a user whether the resources required exceed the maximum resources of said information processing apparatus . 21. A method according to claim 20 or claim 21, wherein said information to be transferred comprises a plurality of types and/or formats of information, and the type or types and/or format or formats of information which can be processed by said information processing apparatus is indicated to a user. 23. A method according to any one of claims 19 to 22, including the step of increasing the resources currently available at said information processing apparatus. 24. A method according to any one of claims 19 to 23, wherein said control step comprises preventing the transference of information to the information processing apparatus if it has insufficient resources currently available to process the information. A method according to any one of claims 19 to 24, wherein said control step comprises controlling the format of the information to be transferred to the information processing apparatus. 26. A method according to any one of claims 19 to 25, including the step of setting user defined requirements for the information processing apparatus;wherein said comparing step includes the step of also comparing the resources required with the user defined requirements for the information processing apparatus. 27. A method according to any one of claims 19 to 26, including a third determining step of determining resources available for communication links to said information processing apparatus, wherein said first determining step includes determining the resources required for transmission of the information over the communication links and said comparing step includes the r step of also comparing the resources required for transmission with the resources available for the communication links.·;28. A method according to any one of claims 19 to 27, wherein said resources required define requirements for the information to be processed in a plurality of formats by the information processing apparatus, and said control step allows the transfer of information in a format compatible with the resources of the information processing apparatus. 30. A method according to any one of claims 19 to 29, wherein said information to be transferred comprises a plurality of types of information, and said control step comprises separately controlling the transfer of each type of information. 31. A method according to claim 30, including a configuration step of configuring said information t processing apparatus to both transmit and receive at least one type of information in dependence upon the result of the comparison step. 32. A method according to claim 32, including the steps of detecting errors during the transference and/or processing of the information, and, if a format of the information is available which requires less resources, 5 changing the format of the information transferred to the format requiring less resources in response to the detected errors . 34. A method according to any one of claims 19 to 28, 10 24 or 25, wherein the format of the information transferred is adaptively controlled in dependence upon the result of the comparison. 35. Control apparatus according to claim 37, including indicator means for indicating to a user whether the resources required exceed the maximum resources of said at least one processing apparatus. 39. Control apparatus according to claim 38, wherein said indicator means is operative to indicate whether the resources required exceed the resources a currently available at said at least one processing apparatus. Control apparatus according to any one of claims 37 to 41, wherein said data comprises a plurality of data types, and said control means is adapted to control the processing of the data types such that said at least one processing appctratus only receives and processes data of the type which it is capable of processing as indicated by the respective resources of the respective processing apparatus . 43. A method of controlling the distributed processing of data by a plurality of processing apparatuses, the method comprising : a first determining step of determining resources required at at least one processing apparatus to process the data in a distributed manner;CA 02283893 1999-09-13 - 56 a second determining step of determining the maximum resources of said at least one processing apparatus which can be made available for the processing of the data if the processing of the data is given resources allocated to other processing operations by said at least one processing apparatus;a monitoring step of monitoring resources currently available at said at least one processing apparatus;a comparing step of comparing the resources required with the resources currently available at said at least one processing apparatus and the maximum resources of said at least one processing apparatus;and a control step of controlling the processing of data by said at leeist one processing apparatus in accordance with the result of the comparison step. 44. A method according to claim 43, including the step of indicating to a user whether the resources required exceed the maximum resources of said at least one f processing apparatus. 45. A method according to claim 44, including the step of indicating to a user whether the resources required exceed the resources currently available at said at least one processing apparatus. A method according to claim 54, wherein each data type may have more than one data format, each set of requirements includes requirements of the or each data format, and said control step includes the step of setting the format o‘f the service provided at said at least one terminal in dependence upon the results of the comparisons . 56. A method according to any one of claims 49 to 58, including a second determining step of determining resources of the network, wherein said comparing step includes the step of also comparing the requirements of the service with the resources of the network, and the service provided at said at least one terminal is controlled in response to the result of the comparison step. 58. A method according to any one of claims 49 to 57, wherein said control step includes the step of configuring said at least one terminal in response to said comparison step. 59. Apparatus according to claim 64, wherein each data type may have more than one data format, each set of requirements includes, requirements of the or each data format, and said control means is adapted to set the format of the service provided at said at least one 25 terminal in dependence upon the results of the comparison. Apparatus according to any one of claims 60 to 66, including third determining means for determining resources available in the network wherein said comparing means is adapted to also compare the requirements of the service with the resources of the network, and said control means is adapted to control the provision of the service at said at least one terminal in dependence upon the result of the comparison. r 68.
