Service node for a telephony network

Abstract

A service node provides a shared added value service within a telephony network, such as a public switch telephone network. Peripheral devices (21, 22, 23), such as speech applications platforms shared announcement platforms and message recording platforms, are connected to a switch (25) which operates under the control of a central control computer (24). The switch includes distributed processors (38, 52) responsive to externally originating signals, such as DTMF signals, generated while calls are being processed. The distributed processing devices supply information derived from said signals to the central control computer. Thus, it is no longer necessary for a central control computer to examine on-going calls in order to detect the presence of DTMF signalling. Detection of DTMF signalling is performed locally and information is returned back to the control computer only when relevant information has been detected. In this way, the size of the switch may be increased relative to the size of the control computer and the level of bandwidth required between the control computer and the switch is significantly reduced.

  1. 1
CLAIMS 1. A service node for use in a telephony network, the service node comprising a plurality of peripheral devices (21, 22, 23);switching means (25) for connecting said peripheral devices to external communication means (26);detecting means (52, 53, 54, 55) associated with said switching means (25) and arranged to detect signalling information in communications channels incoming to the service node from said external communication means;and control processing means (24), the service node being characterised in that said detecting means is formed by distributed processing means (33, 38, 52, 53, 54, 55) and is arranged to detect respective signalling information in each\ incoming communications channel, said control processing means is arranged to generate a representation of a scan pattern of signals and to supply to said distributed processing means said representation and the identity of a said incoming communications channel in which said pattern of signals is to be detected, and said distributed processing means (38) is arranged to perform scan recognition, in accordance with said received pattern, upon detected signalling information in the identified incoming communications channel and, upon recognition, to supply the detected signalling information to said control processing means (24).
  2. 5
A service node according to any of claims 2 to 4, wherein said first type of processing means is a DSP chip (52-55).
  3. 7
A service node according to any of claims 3 to 6, wherein said scan recognition and the supplying of the detected signalling information to said control processing means (24) is performed by said second type processor.
  4. 13
A service node according to any one of claims 1 to 12, wherein said control processing means (24) is arranged to generate said representation such as to define a range of acceptable permutations of received signalling information.
  5. 14
A method of recognising predetermined externally originating signalling information at a service node connectable to a telephony network, comprising steps of :defining, on a control processing means (24), a scan pattern of signals to be detected in an incoming communications channel;downloading, to distributed processing means (33, 38, 52, 53, 54, 55) distributed in a switching means (25), said scan pattern and the identity of a said incoming communications channel in which said pattern of signals is to be detected;detecting signalling information in the identified incoming communications channel;performing scan recognition, in accordance with said received pattern, upon the detected signalling information in the identified incoming communications channel;and upon recognition, supplying the detected signalling information to said control processing means.
  6. 21
A method according to any of claims 14 to20, wherein said distributed processing means converts received signalling information into character codes on a first type of distributed processing means and matches said converted codes against said scan pattern on a second type of processing means.
