Method and apparatus for treatment of neurogenic diabetes mellitus, and other conditions

Abstract

A method and implants provide for relieving pressure from a region of the brainstem within the cranium of a subject with a neuroendocrine servomechani sm. The pressure results from the compression of the region by a blood vessel. The m ethod includes gaining access to the region using a first surgical technique; expo sing the region according to a second surgical technique; lifting the blood vessel from the region according to a third surgical technique, thereby providing the pressure reli ef; and inserting a neurovascular bridge implant between the blood vessel and the re gion to maintain the pressure relief. The neuroendocrine servomechanism is responsiv e to the pressure relief on the region, causing amelioration of a disease. One neuroe ndocrine servomechanism can include the pancreas of the subject, and the pressure rel ief ameliorates non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. The neurovascular bridg e implant can be a preconfigured shredded plastic implant, made of polytetrafluoroethy lene, or a preconfigured thermoplastic implant, made of a polyurethane-based material h aving a glass-transition temperature of between 20.degree.C to 60.degree.C and a tra nsition band of about 8.degree.C.

CA 02187142 2001-09-27 61874-848 -19CLAIMS:1. A neurovascular bridge implant for relieving the pressure between a blood vessel and a preselected region of the brainstem, said implant comprising one of a preconfigured shredded plastic implant and a preconfigured themoplastic implant.
  2. 5
The implant of any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the preselected region of the brainstem includes a region of the brainstem selected from the group consisting of a medulla oblongata portion and a tenth cranial nerve portion.
  3. 6
The implant of anyone of claims 1 to 5 wherein the blood vessel is an artery and the compression is pulsatile compression.
  4. 7
A neurovascular bridge implant for relieving pressure from a preselected region of the brainstem within the cranium of a subject, the subject having a disorder of the normal neuroendocrine servomechanism, the pressure resulting from the compression of the region by a blood CA 02187142 2001-09-27 61874-848 -20vessel, the implant comprising one of a preconfigured shredded plastic implant and a preconfigured thermoplastic implant wherein the neuroendocrine servomechanism is 5 responsive to the pressure relief on the region and the implant maintains the pressure relief.
