Cushioning member for an article of footwear

Abstract

A cushioning member (10) for an article of footwear is provided having a series of interconnected chambers (26 and 42) filled withambient or slightly pressurized air. Impedance means (74) is provided between selected chambers, in order to restrict the flow of air betweenthe chambers (26 and 42). The shape and structure of the impedance means (74) determines the nature of the air flow between chambers(26 and 42), such that the cushioning member (10) can be tailored for various types of activities and body weights, by offering varyingdegrees of cushioning.

WO 95/20332 2181 998 PCT/US94/00895 -36What is Claimed Is:1. An article of footwear comprising: a sole;a resilient cushioning member containing air at 5 ambient pressure disposed within said sole, said cushioning member including a first chamber, a second chamber, and a communication chamber connecting said first chamber and said second chamber, said communication chamber having an average cross10 sectional area which is less than the average crosssectional area of both said first chamber and said second chamber;and impedance means for restricting the flow of air between said first chamber and said second chamber 15 disposed within said cammanj cat-i on chamber and having an average cross-sectional area less than the remainder of said communication chamber.
  2. 5
The article of footwear of claim l, further comprising a sockliner having a cavity portion WO 95/20332 PCT/ÜS94/00895 -37· disposed within an upper, and wherein said cushioning member is disposed within said cavity portion of said sockliner.
  3. 12
The article of footwear of claim i, further comprising a partition disposed within one of said WO 95/20332 2181998 PCT/US94/00895 φ -38first and second chambers for altering the direction of the air flow within said cushioning member.
  4. 15
The article of footwear of claim l, wherein said impedance means is substantially w-shaped.
  5. 16
The article of footwear of claim l, wherein said impedance means is substantially s-shaped.
  6. 18
' An article of footwear comprising:a sole having a heel portion, an arch portion, and a forefoot portion;a cavity portion formed within said sole extending substantially from said heel portion to said forefoot portion;a non-permeable, resilient first chamber containing ambient air disposed within said cavity portion adjacent said...heel portion, said first chamber having an upper surface, a lower surface, a lateral side surface and a medial side surface;a non-permeable, resilient second chamber containing ambient air disposed within said cavity portion adjacent said forefoot portion, said second WO 95/20332 2181998 PCT/US94/00895 •39 •chamber having an upper surface, a lower surface, a lateral side surface and a medial side surface;a non-permeable communication chamber containing ambient air disposed within said cavity portion 5 adjacent said arch portion, said communication chamber connecting said first chamber and said second chamber and having an upper surface, a lower surface, a medial side surface and a lateral side surface;and impedance means disposed within said communica10 tion chamber and having an average cross-sectional area which is smaller than the average cross-sectional area of the remainder of said communication chamber, wherein said impedance means restricts the flow of air between said first chamber and said second chamber and 15 provides enhanced cushioning to said article of footwear by controlling the velocity at which the air moves between said first chamber and said second chamber.
  7. 24
The article of footwear of- claim 18, further 10 comprising ridges disposed on said upper surface and said lower surface of said communication chamber.
  8. 28
An article footwear comprising^ a sole;a resilient cushioning member containing 30 pressurized air. disposed within' said sole, said 998 PCT/US94/00895 -41. WO 95/20332 cushioning member including a first chamber, a second chamber and a communication chamber connecting said first chamber and second chamber, said communication chamber having an average cross-sectional area which 5 is less than the average cross-sectional area of both said first chamber and said second chamber;and impedance means for restricting the flow of air between said first chamber and said second chamber disposed within said communication chamber and having an average cross-sectional area less than the remainder of said communication chamber.
