Improved intraocular lens injector

Abstract

An intraocular lens injector (10) compresses an intraocular lens byrolling the lens (65) into a tight spiral and injects the compressed lens (65)through a relatively small incision (78) in the eye (76) wherein the lensexpands back into its uncompressed state. The lens is inserted into a receivingchannel (18) of the injector (10) wherein as the lens is advanced along thepassageway (20), the lens will roll tightly into a spiral. An insertion rod (100)having a cup-shaped recess (102) on the distal end and also having a ventingsystem (108, 110) for excess lubricant, advances the compressed lens downthe passageway (20).

PCT/US94/13008 WO 95/13022 WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:... _ . 1. A device for compressing and injecting an intraocular lens into an eye, comprising: a body having a passageway and an intraocular lens receiving channel, one surface of said channel intersects and extends tangentially from said passageway;and a shuttle member moveable within said intraocular lens receiving channel, said shuttle member having an end which cooperates with said passageway to roll said intraocular lens upon itself into a compressed spiral.
  2. 2
The .device for - compressing and injecting an intraocular lens, as defined in Claim 1, further comprising:- an insertion tube extending coaxially with said passageway;and an. injection plunger moveable within said passageway.
  3. 3
The device for injecting an intraocular lens, as defined in Claim 1, further comprising:a viewing hole in said body to enable the user to view the intraocular lens as It advances though the receiving channel ;a detent on said shuttle member which snaps into said viewing hole when said shuttle. member has been completely advanced into said receiving channel.
  4. 4
The device for injecting an intraocular lens, as defined in Claim 2, wherein said injection plunger is longer-than said insertion tube and said passageway.
  5. 5
The device for inj ecting an intraocular lens, as defined in Claim 1, wherein said passageway has a diameter of. 1-3 mm.
  6. 6
The device for injecting an intraocular lens, as defined in Claim 2, wherein said insertion tube has an inner diameter of 1-3 mm and an outer diameter of 1.1-4 mm.
  7. 7
The device for injecting an intraocular lens as defined in Claim 1 wherein said body additionally comprises CA 02176366 2004-08-16 an insertion tube for injecting said intraocular lens into a small incision in said eye wherein the inner diameter of said insertion tube is equal to the inner diameter of said passageway.
  8. 8
The device for injecting an intraocular lens, as defined in Claim 2 wherein said injection plunger additionally comprising a cup shaped recess in said distal end.
  9. 9
The device for compressing and injecting an intraocular lens as defined in Claim 8, wherein said injection plunger additionally comprises:a vent hole in said cup shaped recess, said vent hole being concentric with a longitudinal axis of said plunger;and an exhaust channel through said injection plunger perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of said injection plunger, said exhaust channel positioned proximal to the distal end of said plunger and connected to said vent hole.
  10. 10
A method of compressing an intraocular lens, comprising the steps of :providing an intraocular lens;providing a body having a passageway and an intraocular lens receiving channel intersecting the passageway;rolling said lens upon itself into a tightly rolled spiral within the passageway;wherein the step of providing a body comprises the step of arranging said channel so that it intersects the cylindrical passageway off-axis to the passageway at the intersection;and that the rolling step comprises the step of urging said intraocular lens through said channel into said passageway.
