Flush regulator

Abstract

2139262 9401626 PCTABS00030A flush regulator (10) selectively operable in a partial flush mode or a full flush mode for use with a water closet (12) including a water storage tank (14) having a buoyant flapper valve (34) movable between open and closed positions by a flush handle (46) movable between first and second positions to selectively control the flow of water from the tank (14), the flush regulator (10) comprising a buoyant flush member (54) movably disposed within the tank (14) such that when the flush handle (46) is moved from the first to the second position and released the flush member (54) engages the flapper valve (34) to force it to prematurely close to operate in the partial flush mode and when the flush handle (46) is held in the second position the flapper valve (34) is held open to operate in the full flush mode.

PCT/US 93/05890 24 Claims (as amended) 72. A flush regulator selectively operable in a partial flush mode or a full flush mode for use with a water closet including a water storage tank having an overflow tubedisposed therein and a flush drain aperture formed in a lower portion thereof and a buoyant flapper valve pivotally coupled to the overflow tube by an interconnecting member about a pivot axis disposed to selectively seal the flush drain aperture and movable between a closed position and an open position by a flush handle movable between a first and second position to selectively control the flow of water from the water storage tank through the flush drain aperture, said flush regulator comprising a flush control member including mounting mean for pivotally coupling the flush control member to the overflow tube to be movable between an upper position and a lower position, said flush control member adapted to be disposed within the waler storage tank to selectively engage the buoyant flapper valve such that when the flush handle is moved from the first position to the second position and released said flush control member engages the buoyant flapper valve in the open position to force the buoyant flapper valve to prematurely return to the closed position to operate in the partial flush mode to discharge a first volume of water and when the flush handle is moved from the first position to the second position and held in the second position the buoyant flapper valve is held in the open position to operate in the full flush mode to discharge a second volume of water, said mounting mean comprising at least one pivot arm pivotally mounted within the water storage tank in substantially concentric alignment with the pivot axis of the buoyant flapper valve and fixedly coupled to said flush control member at the opposite end thereof. 73. The flush regulator of Claim 72 wherein the buoyant flapper valve is operatively mounted on the lower portion of an overflow tube by an annular mounting ring having at least PCT/US 93/05890 one connecting member extending outwardly from one side thereof to pass through apertures formed on the inner end of the buoyant flapper valve and said pivot arm to pivotally couple, the buoyant flapper valve and said pivot arm to the overflow tube. 74. The flush regulator of Claim 73 wherein the inner end of the interconnecting member of the buoyant flapper valve is operatively mounted on the lower portion of an overflow tube by an annular mounting ring and includes at least one mounting tab including an aperture formed therethrough and said pivot arm includes an aperture formed on the inner end thereof to receive a mounting pin passed through said apertures to pivotally couple said pivot arm to the overflow tube. 75. A flush regulator selectively operable in a partial flush mode or a full flush mode for use with a water closet including a water storage tank having an overflow tube having a lower portion disposed therein and a flush drain aperture formed in a lower portion thereof and a buoyant flapper valve pivotally coupled to the overflow tube by an interconnecting member having an inner end about a pivot axis disposed to selectively seal the flush drain aperture and moveable between a closed position and an open position by a flush handle movable between a first and second position to selectively control the flow of water from the water storage tank through the flush drain aperture, and flush regulator comprising a flush control member including mounting means for pivotally coupling the flush control member to the overflow tube to be moveable between an upper position and a lower position, said flush control member adapted to be disposed within the water storage tank to selectively engage the buoyant flapper valve such that when the flush handle is moved from the first position to the second position and released said flush control member engages the buoyant flapper valve in the open position to force the buoyant flapper valve to prematurely PCT/US 93/05890 26 return to the closed position to operate in the partial flush mode to discharge a first volume of water and when the flush handle is moved from the first position to the second position and held in the second position the buoyant flapper valve is held in the open position to operate in the full flush mode to discharge a second volume of water, said mounting means comprising at least one pivot arm having an inner end pivotaly mounted within the water storage tank in substantially concentric alignment with the pivot axis of the buoyant flapper valve and pivotally coupled to said flush control member at the opposite end thereof by a pivot means. 76. The flush regulator of Claim 75 wherein the buoyant flapper valve in operatively mounted on the lower portion of an overflow tube by an annular mounting ring having at least one connecting member extending outwardly from one side of thereof to pass through apertures formed on the inner end of the buoyant flapper valve and said pivot arm to pivotally couple the buoyant flapper valve and said pivot arm to the overflow tube and said second pivot means comprise a hollow connector and a connector pin passing through an aperture formed through said flush control member and configured to operatively couple to each other. 77. The flush regulator of Claim 75 wherein the inner end of the interconnecting member of the buoyant flapper valve is operatively mounted on the lower portion of the overflow tube by an annular mounting ring and includes at least one mounting tab including an aperture formed therethrough and said pivot arm includes an aperture formed on the inner end thereof to receive a mounting pin passed through the aperture to pivotally couple said pivot arm to the overflow tube and wherein said second pivot means comprises a hollow connector and a connector pin passing through an aperture formed through said flush control member and configured to operatively couple to each other.
