Method and system for executing code remotely

Abstract

A method and system for executing code remotely is provided. In a preferred embodiment, a client program executes on a client node and communicates with a network. The executing client program then requests the execution of server code corresponding to an object instance or object class instance with which the client program desires to communicate. In response to the client program request, the computer system determines a location where the server code will be executed. This determination is made using a set of rules that arbitrate between location contexts specified by the corresponding server program and a location context requested by the client program. Once the appropriate location is determined, the client program forwards its request to the appropriate network node, which requests execution of the requested server code.

CA 02136402 2000-03-17 1. A method in a computer system network for specifying the execution of server code on a computer system node, the network having a plurality of computer system nodes, the method comprising the steps of:executing a client program on a client node;requesting execution of the server code;in response to the request to execute the server code, determining a node where the server code will be executed;and requesting execution of the server code on the determined node;characterized in that the step of determining the node where the server code will be executed comprises: retrieving a client location context indicating a node to execute the server code;retrieving one or more server location contexts, wherein a server location context indicates a node at which the server code can be executed;and evaluating the client location context and the one or more server location contexts to determine the node where the server code will be executed, wherein the determined node is selectively set to one of a plurality of nodes that includes the client node and a node where persistent server data is stored.
  2. 19
A method in a computer system network for specifying a computer system node for the activation of a referenced object through execution of object server code as necessary to implement the behavior of the referenced object, wherein the object server code implements the behavior of an object, the network having a plurality of computer system nodes, the method comprising the steps of:CA 02136402 2000-03-17 executing a client program on a client node;during the step of executing the client program, referencing the object;requesting activation of the referenced object through execution of the object server code as necessary to implement the behavior of the referenced object;in response to the request to activate the referenced object, determining a node where the object server code will be executed as necessary to implement the behavior of the referenced object;and requesting activation of the referenced object on the determined node through execution of the server code on the determined node as necessary to implement the behavior of the referenced object;characterized in that the step of determining the node where the object server code will be executed as necessary to implement the behavior of the referenced object comprises the substeps of: retrieving a client location context for the referenced object, wherein the client location context indicates a node to execute the object server code as necessary to implement the behavior of the referenced object;retrieving one or more server location contexts for the object server code, wherein a server location context indicates a node at which the object server code can be executed;and evaluating the client location context and the one or more server location contexts to determine the node where the object server code will be executed as necessary to implement the behavior of the referenced object.
