System and method for controlling the temperature of a catheter-mounted heater

Abstract

A system for keeping the surface temperature of anelectric resistance-type heater element in a thermodilutioncatheter within safe physiological limits includes, in thepreferred embodiment, a heater element core temperaturemonitor, a monitor for monitoring the power that issupplied to the heater element, and a surface temperaturecalculator for calculating the surface temperature of theheater element based on the core temperature, suppliedpower, and information representing the characteristics ofthe particular catheter under anticipated clinicalconditions. A second aspect of the invention involves asystem for determining the supply of power to the heaterelement based on the core temperature of the heaterelement. A third aspect of the invention involves a systemreadiness test for determining, in vivo, that thethermodilution catheter system is properly calibratedbefore the system is operational. Methods of operation foreach of the above-referenced aspects of the invention arealso disclosed.
