    Claims 1. A method of reading optical information over a substantial range of distances, comprising:digital information set corresponding to the image of said optical 15 information focused on said photosensitive array. 3. The method of reading optical information over a substantial range of distances, as recited in claims 1 and 2, further comprising sequentially repeating said steps until said rate of intensity change with respect to time is maximized. 20 4. The method of reading optical information over a substantial range of distances, as recited in claims 2 and 3, further comprising verifying the validity of said information set. 5. The method of reading optical information over a substantial range of distances, as recited in claim 4, wherein said information set 25 corresponding to the image of said object focused on said receiving means is verified via an RF link. 6. The method of reading optical information over a substantial range of distances, as recited in claims 1 and 2, further comprising concurrently performing said steps on at least two segments of said optical 30 information such that said optical information may be read where at least one segment of said information is at a discrete range from at least one other segment of said information. 7. The method of reading optical information over a substantial range of distances, as recited in claim 6, wherein said fan light beam is at SUEsSTiTUTE CHE5T WO 93/02428 PCT/US92/06156 least one cross-hair fan light beam having both horizontal and vertical components. 8. The method of reading optical information over a substantial range of distances, as recited in claim 7, wherein said horizontal and vertical components of said at least one cross-hair fan light beam has polarization vectors 90° out of phase. 9. The method of reading optical information over a substantial range of distances, as recited in claim 8, wherein said horizontal and vertical components of said at least one cross-hair fan light beam divide optical information to be read into at least two segments and wherein said reflected fan light image allows said photosensitive array to output range information for at least two segments of said optical information whereby each segment may be focused according to said outputs. 10. The method of reading optical information over a substantial range of distances, as recited in claim 9, further comprising producing a digital information set corresponding to the image of each of said segments of said optical information focused on said photosensitive array. 11. The method of reading optical information over a substantial range of distances, as recited in claim 9, wherein said photosensitive array is of a two dimensional matrix type such that said array may sense both the variable positions of the incident cross-hair beams and the spacial modulation of the reflected light beams. 12. An apparatus for reading optical information over a substantial range of distances, comprising: (a) means for reflecting a fan light beam from an object having an image to be focused;(b) means for optically directing the image of said reflected light beam such that said light beam impinges on the surface of a photosensitive array;(c) means for processing the output of said photosensitive array such that the rate of intensity change with respect to time is determined;and (d) means for focusing said image according to the output of said photosensitive array. The apparatus for reading optical information over a substantial range of distances, as recited in claim 12, further comprising means for producing a digital information set corresponding to the image of said optical information focused on said photosensitive array. 5 14. The apparatus for reading optical information over a substantial range of distances, as recited in claims 12 and 13, further comprising means for sequentially repeating said steps until said rate of intensity change with respect to time is maximized. 15. The apparatus for reading optical information over a substantial 10 range of distances, as recited in claims 13 and 14, further comprising means for verifying the validity of said information set. 16. The apparatus for reading optical information over a substantial range of distances, as recited in claim 15, wherein said information set corresponding to the image of said object focused on said receiving means 15 is verified via an RF link. 17. The apparatus for reading optical information over a substantial range of distances, as recited in claims 12 and 13, further comprising means for concurrently performing said steps on at least two segments of said optical information such that said optical information may be read where at 20 least one segment of said information is at a discrete range from at least one other segment of said information. 18. The apparatus for reading optical information over a substantial range of distances, as recited in claim 17, wherein said fan light beam is at least one cross-hair fan light beam having both horizontal and vertical 25 components. 19. The apparatus for reading optical information over a substantial range of distances, as recited in claim 18, wherein said horizontal and vertical components of said at least one cross-hair fan light beam has polarization vectors 90° out of phase. 30 20. A focusing system for a bar code reader, comprising: (a) means for emitting a light beam, such that said light beam is reflected from a surface of a bar code;(b) receiving means for receiving said reflected light beam;(c) means for converting said reflected light beam into an electrical signal defining a signal level with respect to time;(d) focusing means for adjusting the focus of the image to change the image reflected onto the receiving means;(e) means for measuring a rate of image intensity with respect to time based on the electrical signal produced;and (f) computer means for sequentially, (1) using said measuring means to produce a first electrical signal corresponding to a first position of said focusing means, (2) adjusting said focusing means to produce a subsequent electrical signal corresponding to said subsequent position of said focusing means, (3) comparing said first electrical signal to said subsequent electrical signal, (4) determining which of said first and subsequent signals represents a faster rate of intensity change with respect to time, and (5) adjusting said focusing means toward the position which produced said faster rate of intensity change with respect to time. 31. The focusing system of claim 30, further comprising means for producing a digital information set corresponding to the image of said bar code focused on said receiving means. 32. The focusing system of claim 31, further comprising verification means for determining the validity of the information set produced by said system. 33. The focusing system of claim 30, further comprising means for repeating said sequential operations of said computer means until said rate of intensity change with respect to time is maximized. The focusing system of claim 36, wherein the diffusing means is cylindrical in shape.
