Handle for quick-action coupling

Abstract

A handle (30, 32) for the female half (10) of a quick-action coupling of the type including a body (18) having afirst end adapted to receive a hose and a second end adaptedto receive the male half (12) of the coupling, a graspingmeans (52, 54, 56) coupled to the body for releasablygrasping the male half of the coupling when inserted into thesecond end of the body, and a spring-biased slide member (20)coupled to the body and co-acting with the grasping means forcausing a locking engagement between the male (12) and female(10) halves. The handle comprises a housing (30, 32) havingan interior opening in a first end thereof dimensioned so asto receive the female half of the coupling therein in aloose-fit sliding manner. The housing has a first interiorannular portion (36) remote from the first end thereof forengaging the body (18) of the female half of the coupling soas to push the female half of the coupling towards acorresponding male half of the coupling, without impedingmovement of the slide member (20) relative to the body (18),and a second interior annular portion (42, 44) for engagingthe slide member so as to slide the slide member within theinterior opening relative to the body when the user pulls thehousing (30, 32) away from the male half (12) of thecoupling.

  1. 1
Claims 1. A handle (30, 32) for the female half (10) of a quickaction coupling of the type including a body (18) having a first end adapted to receive a hose and a second end adapted to receive the male half (12) of said coupling, a grasping means (52, 54, 56) coupled to said body for releasably grasping the male half of said coupling when inserted into the second end of said body, and a spring-biased slide member (20) coupled to said body and co-acting with said grasping means for causing a locking engagement between said male (12) and female (10) halves, wherein said user must grasp said slide member and move it towards said first end of said body in order to cause said grasping means to release said male half of said coupling, but said user must not push said slide member towards said second end when coupling said male and female halves together, comprising:a housing (30, 32) having an interior opening in a first end thereof dimensioned so as to receive said female half of said coupling therein in a loose-fit sliding manner, said housing having a first annular portion (36) in its interior opening at a point which is remote from said first end thereof for engaging the body (18) of said female half of said coupling so as to enable a user, via said housing, to push said female half of said coupling towards a corresponding male half of said coupling, without impeding movement of said slide member (20) relative to said body (18), and the housing including in its interior opening at a point which is near said first end thereof a second annular portion (42, 44) for engaging said slide member so as to slide said slide member within said interior opening relative to said body when the user pulls on said handle to separate said male and female halves of the coupling.
  2. 3
Apparatus according to claim 2, wherein:said sleeve (32) includes said first and second annular portions (36, 42, 44) of said housing which engage said female half (10) of said coupler.
  3. 4
Apparatus according to claim 3, wherein:said sleeve (32) includes said first annular portion (36) near one end thereof, and said second annular portion is formed by a snap ring member (44) retained in a groove (42) near the other end of said sleeve.
  4. 5
Apparatus according to claim 4, wherein:said female half (10) of said coupling comprises a cylindrical body (18) and said slide member (20) comprises a cylindrical slide which slides over a portion of said body;and the diameter of the inside surface of said sleeve (32) is dimensioned so as to allow sliding relative movement between said sleeve and said female half (10) of said coupler, said first annular portion (36) being formed in said sleeve (32) at one end thereof so as to be slidably engageable with said body (18), and said annular groove (42) being provided in the inside surface of said sleeve near its other end for receiving said snap ring (44), the distance between said first annular portion (36) and said snap ring (44) being slightly greater than the distance between the portions (40, 46) of said body (18) and said slide member (20) which they respectively engage.
