Abstract

This invention relates to compositions of thermally stable electrically conductive substituted and unsubstituted polyanilines and to conductive articles formed from such compositions.

    ‘ 2011189 -38WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:1. An electrically conductive homopolymer or copolymer comprising a substituted or unsubstituted polyaniline derived from polymerizing an aniline of the formula : having therein a dopant solute selected from the group consisting of: R 1 (PO’) r , R 1 (POp r , R 1 (PO 3 H) r , R(SOp r , R l ( S0 3 ) r' R ir and R i< B0 2 H ) r wherein: R^ is the same or different at each occurrence and is a substituted or unsubstituted organic radical;n is an integer from 0 to 4 , m is an integer from 1 to 5 with the proviso that the sum of n and m is 5;r is an integer equal to or greater than 1;R o and R. are the same or different at each occurrence and are R^ substituents, hydrogen or alkyl, with the proviso that at least one of R 2 or R 4 is hydrogen;R^ is deuterium, alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxy, cycloalkyl, hydroxy, cycloalkenyl, alkanoyl, alkylthio, aryloxy, alkylthioalkyl, alkylaryl, arylalkyl, alkylsulfinyl, alkoxyalkyl, alkylsulfonyl, aryl, arylthio, arylsulfinyl, alkoxycarbonyl, nitro, alkysilane, phosphinic acid, arylsulfonyl, phosphonic acid, sulfonic -39acid, boric acid, phosphoric acid, sulfonate, borate, phosphonate, phosphinate, phosphate, sulfinic acid, -sulfinate, carboxylic acid, halogen, carboxylate, cyano, or alkyl or alkoxy substituted with one or more phosphonic acid, sulfonic acid, boric acid, sulfinic acid, sulfinate, phosphoric acid, sulfonate, borate, carboxylate, phosphonate, phpsphate, carboxylic acid, halogen, nitro, hydroxy, cyano or epoxy moieties;or any two R 3 substituents or any one R 3 substituent and any one R^ or R 4 substituent taken together may form an alkylene or alkenylene chain completing a 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 membered aromatic or alicyclic carbon ring, which ring may optionally include one or more divalent ester, carbonyl, nitrogen, sulfur, sulfinyl, sulfonyl or oxygen, or R 3 is an aliphatic moiety having repeat units of the formula: - (OCH 2 CH 2 ) q -O-CH 3 , - (OCH 2 CH(CH 3 ) ) q O-CH 3 , -(CH 2 ) q CF 3 , (CF 2 ) q CF 3 , or -CH 2 ) q CH 3 wherein q is a positive whole number;with the proviso that the homopolymer or copolymer is thermally stable and includes 10 or more recurring aromatic moieties.

    The homopolymer or copolymer according to claim 1 wherein m is from about 3 to about 5.

    The homopolymer or copolymer according to claim 3 wherein m is from about 4 to about 5.

    The homopolymer or copolymer according to claim 1 wherein said polyaniline is derived from substituted anilines.
