Highly efficient coding apparatus

Abstract

The invention lies in a highly efficient coding apparatus configured to break a digital picture signal into picture blocks and, in receipt of a signal from a coding circuit for performing variable-length coding for each picture block, generate an output signal whose sync blocks are serial. By inserting the most significant bit of a coding output signal for each picture element in a predetermined position of the sync block, a reproduced picture is obtained also in the picture search mode in which the head scans a tape across a plurality of tracks.

What is claimed is:1. A highly efficient coding apparatus for coding digital video data in the form of blocks of digital video data representing plural picture elements so as to provide compressed video data for transmission by data transmission means having a predetermined transmission capacity, comprising: block segmentation means supplied with input video data and for generating a series of blocks of digital video data and for generating a series of blocks of digital video data representing plural picture elements, encoding means for encoding the digital video data in each block with a variable digitized bit number determined by a characteristics of each block so as to provide coded data of variable bit length, and frame segmentation means for generating a series of sync block data, each of which includes a plurality of blocks of coded data, and most significant bits of the coded data being located in predetermined portions of each sync block.
