Biconstituent polypropylene/polyethylene fibers

Abstract

ABSTRACT Biconstituent fibers consist essentially ofpolypropylene as a continuous phase having distributedtherein 20 to 45 weight percent of linear low densitypolyethylene (LLDPE) fibrils as a dispersed phasearrayed in a substantially omni-directional splayedmanner. The LLDPE has a melt flow rate of 12 to 120g/10 mins (ASTM) and preferably a density of 0.92 to0.94 g/cm3. The preferred alkylene comonomers of theLLDPE have 4 to 8 carbon atoms, especially 1-octene inan amount of 5 to 10 percent. Fibers of deniers below30, preferably below 15, can be obtained and hav-improved tenacity and hand as compared topolypropylene fibers.35,451C-F

  1. 1
64693-4130 THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWSs 1. A biconstituent fiber consisting essentially of polypropylene as a continuous phase, having distributed therein 20 to 45 percent by weight of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) fibrils as a dispersed phase arrayed in a substantially omnidirectionally splayed manner, said LLDPE having a melt flow rate (as measured in accordance with ASTM D-1238 (E)) in the range of 12 to 120 g/10 min.
  2. 4
A fiber as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the fiber has a denier size of less than 30.
  3. 7
A fiber as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, 5 or 6 wherein the LLDPE has a melt flow rate of 20 to 100 g/10 mins.
  4. 9
    A fiber as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, 5, 6 or ο 8 wherein the LLDPE has a density of 0.92 to 0.93 g/cm .
  5. 10
A fiber as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, 5, 6 or 8 wherein the alkylene comonomer contains 4 to 8 carbon atoms.
  6. 11
A fiber as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, 5, 6 or 8 wherein the polyethylene comprises 25 to 35 weight percent of the total.
  7. 13
A fiber as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, 5, 6, 8 or 12 wherein the polyethylene fibrils are predominantly of a diameter of less than 0.05 micrometers.
  8. 14
A fiber as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, 5, 6, 8 or 12 wherein the said alkylene comonomer is 1-octene. -231296498 64693-4130 15. A fiber as claimed in claim 14, wherein the LDPE has a density of about 0.925 g/cm an octene content of 5 to 10 percent, and a melt flow index of 50±20 g/10 mins. 16. A process for preparing a biconstituent fiber according to any one of claims 1 to 3, 5, 6, 8, 12 or 15 which process comprises intimately mixing molten said polypropylene (PP) and molten said linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) to disperse the LLDPE in the PP and maintaining the dispersion until the mixture, as an extrudate, is expelled from a spinning die to form a fiber in which LLDPE fibrils, as a dispersed phase, are arrayed in a substantially omni-directional splayed manner.
