Label printing system

Abstract

LABEL PRINTING SYSTEM Abstract of the Disclosure A label printing system. The system includes a computeroutput printer of the type having a platen roller, a bail rodassembly and a tractor feeder, together defining a web path.A separator rod is attached parallel to the bail rod andintroduces an separation angel into the web path. Labelsattached to a web of released material are peeled by theseparation angel after printing. Variable information isprinted on a label being processed and the web is advanced toprint fixed information on the next label; moving the printedlabel over the separator rod and peeling it from the web. Athin edge is left attached to facilitate retrieval by theoperator of the printed label. A shipping manifest systemincluding the subject label printer is also disclosed.

  5. 5
A label printing system as described in claim 2 said labels are mounted on a web of release liner with a pitch P, said labels have a length L in the direction of motion of said web, said labels include an upper field for printing fixed information and a lower field for printing variable information, the length of said upper field in the direction of motion of said web being D2, and the distance between the print head of said printer and said separating means being Djj said data processing means controlling said printer;a) to begin each label printing cycle at the top of said lower field for the label currently being processed;b) to first print variable information for said currently processed label;c) to then advance to the next label and print fixed information in said upper field;whereby, d) the length of the separation between said currently processed label and said web is given by, S=P+P2-Dj;and, e) P,L,D-j_ and D2 are chosen so that S is greater than zero and less than L.
  6. 6
A label printing system as described in claim 5 said labels are mounted on a web of release liner with a pitch P, said labels have a length in the direction of motion of said web L, said labels include an upper field for printing fixed information and a lower field for printing variable information, the length of said upper field in the direction of motion of said web being D2, and the distance between the print head of said printer and said separating means being Dj; said data processing means controlling said printer:a) to begin each label printing cycle at the top of said lower field for the label currently being processed;b) to first print variable information for said currently processed label;c) to then advance to the next label and print fixed information in said upper field;whereby, d) the length of the separation between said currently processed label and said web is given by, S=P+D2_Dj;and, e) P,L,Dq and D2 are chosen so that S is greater than zero and less than L.
  7. 7
A label printing system as described in claim 2 wherein said separating edge is rotatable around said bail rod assembly to allow adjustment of said angel.
  8. 8
A label printing system as described in claim 2 wherein said bail rod assembly is hinged to allow rotation away from said platen roller, and further comprising means for holding said bail rod assembly against said platen roller while said system is in operation.
  9. 9
A label printing system as described in claim 1 further comprising:a) weighing means for determining the weight of a parcel to be shipped;b) input means for inputting additional information pertaining to said parcel;c) said data processing means receiving said weight information and said additional information and determining variable information, such as shipping cost, pertaining to said parcel;and, d) said data processing system outputting said variable information to said printer for printing on said labels.
  10. 10
A label printing system as described in claim 1 wherein said labels are mounted on a web of release liner with a pitch P, said labels have a length in the direction of motion of said web L, said labels include an upper field for printing fixed information and a lower field for printing variable information, the length of said upper field in the direction of motion of said web being D2> and the distance between the print head of said printer and said separating means being Dj; said data processing means controlling said printer:a) to begin each label printing cycle at the top of said lower field for the label currently being processed;b) to first print variable information for said currently processed label;c) to then advance to the next label and print fixed information in said upper field;whereby, d) the length of the separation between said currently processed label and said web is given by, S=P+D2-d1' and, e) Ρ,Ιι,ϋχ and D2 are chosen so that S is greater than zero and less than I».
