Wide band integrated services local communication system

Abstract

ABSTRACT A wide band local communications system handling bothcircuit switched and packet switched communications hasa number of units accessing a common unidirectional trans-mission line, which may be folded, on which circuit switchedand packet switched communications are organized intohybrid frames comprising a region for each communicationtype. Each unit is in communication with a number ofcommunication stations or a control centre which carriesout centralized functions. The access units cooperatewith one another and with a frame signal generator, eithercontrolling or associated with each unit, to implement ina distributed manner an ordered collision free round robinprotocol in both frame regions, based on physical unitlocation.

    - 31 THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:1. A wide band integrated communication system for the transmission of both packet switched and circuit switched data comprising a unidirectional communications transmission line on which data is organized into hybrid frames each comprising a circuit region allotted to circuit switched data and a circuit region allotted to packet switched data;a plurality of communication units, each in transmitting and receiving communication with one or more stations, and each being distributed along the unidirectional transmission line with transmission means thereto, receiving means therefrom and detection means to detect activity of communication units upstream on said line, said units being arranged so that data transmitted by one unit is available to all the other units;means controlling access of the units to the line for data transmission and reception on the basis of existing line activity, whereby for each frame region the communication units have access to said line in turn in separate rounds for each type of frame region, beginning from the most upstream unit, each unit having access to the circuit region of a single frame during a round for the transmission of circuit switched data, whilst the data from a round may be distributed over the packet regions of one or more frames for the transmission of packet switched data;a frame signal generator to send a start-of-frame signal to the line;means to control the active period within the circuit region of each first communication unit to a duration varying from frame to frame in dependence upon demand, each active period being shared among the stations associated with the communication units;and means to provide an inactive period before each active period and an additional predetermined guard inactive period indicative of inactivity by any first communication unit during its turn. - 32

A system according to any of Claims 1, 2 or 3, in which the circuit switched data generated by different stations of a unit is organized, during the circuit switched activity of this unit during a frame, so that there is an alternation of the data relevant to a first type of communication, whose source is characterized by emissions and pauses, and data relevant to a second type of communication, whose source presents a continuous emission during the whole communication, and in that the means for controlling access to the line in each unit comprises a logic network counting the number of communications of the first type originated by stations associated with the preceding units and with the unit itself and active during the frame, and enable the transmission of the information relevant to further - 33 communications of the same type, only if said number is lower than a predetermined maximum.
