Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a fiber optic adapter for use with fiber optic connectors. The fiber optic adapter includes a housing having a first axial end portion defining a first adapter port and a second axial end portion defining a second adapter port. The fiber optic adapter further includes a first retaining mechanism that is operably associated with the first axial end portion for retaining a first fiber optic connector in the first adapter port of the fiber optic adapter and a second retaining mechanism that is operably associated with the first axial end portion for retaining the first fiber optic connector in the first adapter port of the fiber optic adapter.

    Translation of claims of equivalent WO 2008091719 A2 WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:1. A fiber optic adapter comprising: a housing having a first axial end portion defining a first adapter port and a second axial end portion defining a second adapter port;a first retaining mechanism for retaining a first fiber optic connector in the first adapter port of the fiber optic adapter;and a second retaining mechanism for retaining the first fiber optic connector in the first adapter port of the fiber optic adapter. 2. The fiber optic adapter of claim 1 , wherein the first retaining mechanism includes a set of threads defined by the first axial end portion. 3. The fiber optic adapter of claim 2, wherein the set of threads are internal threads. 4. The fiber optic adapter of claim 2, wherein the second retaining mechanism includes a snap-fit structure. 5. The fiber optic adapter of claim 4, wherein the snap-fit structure includes a notch disposed in the first axial end portion. 6. The fiber optic adapter of claim 1 , wherein the housing defines an annular sealing surface having an inner diameter that is less than or equal to 15 mm. 7. The fiber optic adapter of claim 1 , wherein the housing defines an annular sealing surface having an inner diameter that is less than or equal to 12.5 mm. 8. The fiber optic adapter of claim 1, wherein the housing defines an annular sealing surface having an inner diameter that is less than or equal to 10 mm. 9. A fiber optic adapter comprising: a housing having a first axial end portion defining a first adapter port and a second axial end portion defining a second adapter port;the first adapter port defining a set of internal threads for retaining a first fiber optic connector in the first adapter port;and the first adapter port further defining a notch for retaining the first fiber optic connector in the first adapter port. 10. A fiber optic connection system comprising: a fiber optic adapter having a first axial end portion defining a first adapter port and a second axial end portion defining a second adapter port;a fiber optic connector having: a connector housing having an end defining a plug portion sized for insertion into the first adapter port of the fiber optic adapter;a ferrule assembly mounted at least partially within the connector housing, the ferrule assembly including a ferrule located at the plug portion of the connector housing;a sealing member mounted about an exterior of the connector housing;a first retaining mechanism for retaining the fiber optic connector within the first adapter port of the fiber optic adapter;and a second retaining mechanism for retaining the fiber optic connector within the first adapter port of the fiber optic adapter. 11. The fiber optic connection system of claim 10, wherein the first retaining mechanism includes a set of threads. 12. The fiber optic connection system of claim 11 , wherein the set of threads are external threads. 13. The fiber optic connection system of claim 12, wherein the external threads are defined by the fiber optic connector. 14. The fiber optic connection system of claim 10, wherein the second retaining mechanism includes a snap-fit structure. 15. The fiber optic connection system of claim 14, wherein the snap-fit structure is a latch mechanism. 16. The fiber optic connection system of claim 15, wherein the latch mechanism includes a cantilever arm having a retention tab. 17. The fiber optic connection system of claim 16, wherein the cantilever arm with the retention tab is defined by the fiber optic connector. 18. The fiber optic connection system of claim 17, wherein a notch, which is adapted to receive the retention tab, is defined by the fiber optic adapter. 19. The fiber optic connection system of claim 10 further comprising a first plug receptacle, which is accessed through the first adapter port of the fiber optic adapter, defines a pair of angled surfaces adapted for engagement with the adapter port of the fiber optic connector. 20. A fiber optic adapter comprising: an outer housing defined by a first housing piece having a first axial end defining a first port and a second housing piece having a second axial end defining a second port, wherein the first housing piece and the second housing piece are interconnected by a latch mechanism;a first retaining mechanism for retaining a first fiber optic cable in the first adapter port;and a second retaining mechanism for retaining the first fiber optic cable in the first adapter port. 21. The fiber optic adapter of claim 20, wherein the first housing piece includes a first region and a second region. 22. The fiber optic adapter of claim 21 further comprising a shoulder which separates the first region and the second region of the first housing piece. 23. The fiber optic adapter of claim 21 , wherein the second housing piece includes a first region and a second region. 24. The fiber optic adapter of claim 23, wherein the second region of the first housing piece includes a keying member and the first region of the second housing piece includes a keyway for proper rotational alignment between the first housing piece and the second housing piece. 25. The fiber optic adapter of claim 20, wherein the second region of the first housing piece includes external threads. 26. The fiber optic adapter of claim 25, further comprising a mounting nut in threaded engagement with the external threads of the second region of the first housing piece. 27. The fiber optic adapter of claim 20, wherein the first retaining mechanism is a set of internal threads disposed in the first housing piece. 28. The fiber optic adapter of claim 27, wherein the second retaining mechanism is a notch defined by the first housing piece. 29. The fiber optic adapter of claim 20, wherein the latch mechanism includes a retention tab defined by the second housing piece. 30. The fiber optic adapter of claim 29, wherein the latch mechanism includes a cantilever arm, defined by the first housing piece, having a base end, which is integrally formed with the first housing piece, a free end, and an opening, which is adapted to receive the retention tab of the second housing piece. 31. The fiber optic adapter of claim 20, wherein the first housing piece defines an annular sealing surface having an inner diameter less than or equal to 15 mm. 32. The fiber optic adapter of claim 20, wherein the first housing piece defines an annular sealing surface having an inner diameter less than or equal to 12.5 mm. 33. The fiber optic adapter of claim 20, wherein the first housing piece defines an annular sealing surface having an inner diameter less than or equal to 10 mm.
