System and method for aircraft braking system usage monitoring

The invention relates to a system and method for monitoring wear of one or more aircraft parts such as an aircraft brake, an aircraft tire, a standby system, and landing gear. One or more sensors are provided to sense a utilization parameter, and an estimate of the utilization of the part can be determined based on the signal that indicates the sensed value of the utilization parameter of the aircraft part. A plurality of sensors may be provided for sensing usage of a plurality of parts of the aircraft and the estimated usage of the part may be stored for accessing the estimate by ground personnel. When applied to monitor aircraft brake wear, a linear brake wear indicator attached to the brake moves a discrete distance when the brake is applied, and a linear position encoder measures the distance traveled by the linear brake wear indicator as a indication of brake use. A wheel speed monitor can also be provided to measure the wheel speed of the aircraft to distinguish between static brake applications and moving brake applications based on the wheel speed signal.
