Descriptive Report of the Patent of Invention LOADER SUPPORT.
Technical Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to loader support for machine application to substantially identical containers. The present invention relates more particularly to a carrier which can be sectioned to form individual carriers with separate openings for receiving the individual containers. Detachable handles are pro10, which allow the containers to be easily removed.
Fundamentals of the Invention
Typically, a carrier support provided with openings for receiving individual containers for machine application to substantially identical containers is formed, such as by die cutting, from a single sheet of resilient polymeric material, such as low density polyethylene. An example of such a carrier is indicated in US Patent
No. 9,219,117 to Weaver et al.
Several attempts have been made to provide this loader with the ability to open when

torn. An example of particular interest is shown in US Patent No. 4,064,989 to Olsen.
As noted in US Patent No. 4,064,989 to Olsen, external band segments of this carrier are formed with detachable handles, which extend from the external band segments. An opening, which is associated with each handle, extends at an acute angle to a streaked line to the base of that handle. An arrow is printed on each handle, in order to indicate to a user the direction in which that handle must be pulled in order to split the outer segment formed with that handle. In actual experience with this support, it was found that if the user pulls the handle in the wrong direction there will be some risk of failure due to the fact that a handle is pulled out without the outer segment being torn, or due to the fact that the outer segment exhibits excessive resistance to being torn.
A recent example of an attempt to provide loading support with the ability to open when torn is indicated in US Patent No. 9,925,020 to Gordon. Previous examples are indicated in US Patent No. 9,997,169 to Poupitch, in US Patent No. 9,086,602 to Rapata, in US Patent No. 9,050,790 to Owen, and in US Patent No. 9,721,337 to Braun et al.
The need continues, as the present invention is concerned, for an improved loader with the ability to open when torn.

Summary of the Invention
The present invention provides a carrier carrier formed from a single sheet of resilient polymeric material, such as low density polyethylene, for machine application to substantially identical containers. This support can be sectioned to form individual carriers, which are configured to include detachable handles that allow the containers to be removed easily. Each individual carrier has separate openings for receiving individual containers. Preferably, the separate openings are arranged in two longitudinal rows.
The support is formed for each individual loader with integrally joined band segments that define the separate openings. The band segments include outer segments that generally extend in a longitudinal direction when the support is not tensioned.
Each outer segment is formed with a detachable handle extended in a transverse direction when the support is not tensioned. It is preferable for each handle to extend into one of the separate openings when the support is not tensioned. In addition, a peculiarity characteristic of the present invention is that each handle has slits in order to define a series of brittle bridges, as described later.

A first slot in each loop extends in a generally longitudinal direction when the support is not tensioned. Preferably, the first slot of each loop has an open end on the outer edge of that loop and a closed end. Alternatively, the first slot of each loop has an adjacent but spaced end in relation to the outer edge of that loop, in order to define a brittle bridge between that end of the first slot and the outer edge of that loop.
A second slot in each handle extends in one direction, usually transverse when the load carrier is not tensioned. Preferably, the second slot is spaced from the first slot so that a brittle bridge is defined between the first and the second slots. Alternatively, the first and second slits can be sections of a continuous slit, which can comprise a curved slit that connects the first and second slits.
A preferred feature is that the first and second slits of each loop are arranged so that an imaginary line extended in a generally longitudinal direction from the first slit of that loop intersects the second slit of that loop. In this way, a part of the second slot extends on each side of the imaginary line, when said support is not tensioned.
In a preferred arrangement, each outer segment is slit in order to define the third and fourth slits.

as described later. When considering the third and fourth slits, it is convenient to refer to each outer segment as provided with first and second edges, where the first edge merges with the outer edge of the loop that extends from that outer segment.
Each of the third and fourth slits extends in a generally longitudinal direction when the support is unstressed. The third and fourth slits of each outer segment are arranged so that a brittle bridge is defined between that third slit and the second loop of the handle extending from that outer segment, so that a brittle bridge is defined between those third and fourth slits, and so that a brittle bridge is defined between that fourth slot and the second edge of that outer segment.
The slots associated with each handle are arranged so that the outer segments are not significantly weakened, but so that the brittle bridges can be easily torn by a user who pulls on that handle, as if the outer segment formed with that handle can be sectioned easily to release a container from the opening partially linked by that outer segment. There is a minimal risk of failure due to this external segment breaking in application machinery, or due to this handle being pulled out without tearing that external segment. At least in the preferred arrangement, there is a minimal risk of failure due to that external segment

present excessive resistance to being torn.
Here, references to cracks in the load carrier are intended to indicate strokes or lines that are not cut entirely through the load carrier, as well as those that are cut entirely through the load carrier and cracks defined by multiple perforations.
These and other objectives, characteristics and advantages of the present invention are evident from the following description of certain embodiments of the present invention, with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Description · Detailed 'Illustrated Modalities
As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the loader support 10 for machine application to substantially identical containers 12 is a preferred embodiment of the present invention. This support 10 is formed with separate openings 14 to receive the individual containers 12. The support carrier 12 is sectionable along transverse lines L, to form individual carriers 20 (an illustrated) which are substantially identical.
As shown in Figure 1, containers 12 are beverage cans of a type commonly used for beer, soft drinks and other drinks. In addition, each container 12 has a bracket 16 at one end, which is provided with a detachable handle 18. However, the present invention is not limited to use. of these cans, but it can be used with cans, bottles and other containers of various types.
In Figure 1, a package is shown, which

comprises six of these containers 12 and a magazine 20, as detached from the holder 10. Although the magazine 20 is illustrated as directly adjacent to the headrests 16, the present invention is not limited to that location in the containers 12. The present invention contemplates the fact that loader 20 can be positioned downwards on the side walls of these containers. In Figure 2, one of these loaders 20 is shown in an un-tensioned condition.
The loader support 10 is formed in a piece of indeterminate length, such as through die cutting, from a single sheet of resilient polymeric material. A preferred material is low density polyethylene. A preferred thickness for such support 10, in a non-tensioned condition, if low density polyethylene is employed, is preferably approximately 406 microns (16 mils).
loader support 10 is formed, for each individual loader 20, with integrally joined band segments that define six separate openings 14. As shown in Figure 2, these openings are in a rectangular arrangement with longitudinal rows and transverse rows, that is, two rows longitudinal and three transverse rows. The band segments include the outer segments 22 which extend in a generally longitudinal direction when that support 10 is not tensioned.
<td colspan="2"> ···· · · ·</td><td rowspan="2">• · · «. ···· • · · The "</td><td rowspan="2"> • ··</td>
<td> * » » ·</td><td></td>
<td> ···</td><td> •</td><td> • · · ·</td><td> • · ·</td>
A peculiarity characteristic of the preferred embodiment illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3 is that each handle 30 has slits in order to define the first and second slits described below.
Each external segment 22 is formed with a detachable handle 30 which extends in a generally transverse direction when the loader support 10 is not tensioned. This loop 30 extends from a median part of that outer segment 22. Preferably, as illustrated, each loop 30 extends inwardly, towards one of the separate openings 14, when this support 10 is not tensioned. However, alternatively, each handle 30 may extend outward when that support 10 is not tensioned.
The first slot 32 of each handle 30 extends in a generally longitudinal direction when the load carrier is not tensioned. This slot 32 has an open end 34 at an outer edge 36 of that handle 30, as shown, and a closed end 38.
The second slot 40 of each loop 30 extends in a generally transverse direction when the load carrier 10 is not tensioned. The second slot 40 is spaced from the first slot 32 in order to define a brittle bridge 42 between the first and second slots.
The first and second slits of each handle 30

<td></td><td>flflfl fl</td><td> «</td><td> • · · ·</td><td> •</td><td> • ·</td>
are arranged so that an imaginary line extended in a generally longitudinal direction of the first slot 32 intersects the second slot 40 .. Thus, as illustrated, a part of the second slot 40 extends on either side of the imaginary line when the load carrier 10 does not is tensioned. Consequently, when the brittle bridge 42 is torn by a user pulling the handle 30, there is a minimal risk that part of that handle 30 will be pulled out of the rest of that handle 30 or that this handle 30 will be pulled out of the formed outer segment 22 with this loop 30. A form of continuous pullout will be directed substantially transversely to the outer segment 22 as a result of the orientation of the second slot 40.
Since the band segments including the outer segments 22 are tensioned by application machinery (not shown) when the loading support 10 is applied to the containers 12, it is important that the second slot 40 of each loop 30 does not weaken the outer segment 22 formed with this handle 30. In this way, the second slot 40 of each loop 30 extends approximately up to, but not substantially beyond, an imaginary line where this loop 30 is merged with the outer segment 22 formed with this loop 30, and along that loop 30 tends to bend, as shown in Figure 1, when the carrier 10 is applied to the containers
12.

A peculiarity characteristic of the preferred modality illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3 is that, in a region close to each loop 30, each outer segment 22 is provided with slits to define the third and fourth slots described below.
When considering the third and fourth slits, it is convenient to refer to each outer segment 22 as having a first edge or inner edge 44 divided into separate parts, one on each side of the extended handle 30 of segment 22, and as having a second edge or outer edge 46. The first edge or inner edge 44 merges with the outer edge 36 of the handle 30 and tends to coincide, with an imaginary line along which the handle 30 tends to bend, as shown in Figure 1, by applying the loader support to a machine. 10 to the above mentioned containers.
Each - between the third and fourth slits of each external segment 22 extends in a generally longitudinal direction when the loader support 10 is unstressed. Consequently, segment 22 is not substantially weakened by its third and fourth slits and does not tend to be broken when tensioned by the application machinery (not shown) used for machine application of the loader support 10 to the above mentioned containers 12.
In each outer segment 22, the first slot 50 is closest to the first edge or inner edge ···· ·· • · · · «·
<img file="BR9102310A_D0003.tif" />
from segment 22, and the fourth slot 52 is closer to its second edge or outer edge 46. In addition, the third and fourth slits are arranged so that an imaginary line extended in a generally transverse direction from the second slot 40 of the handle 30 extending from the segment 22 when the loader support 22 is not tensioned it intersects the third slot 50, approximately at a right angle, as shown, but does not intersect the fourth slot 52. As illustrated, thethe first slot 32 of loop 30 and the fourth slot 52 of segment 22 are on opposite sides of the imaginary line mentioned in the previous sentence.
The third and fourth slits of each outer segment 22 are arranged so that they define a breakable bridge 54 between the third slot 50 of the outer segment 22 and the second slot 40 of the handle 30 extending from that outer segment 22, a brittle bridge 56 between the third and fourth slits, and a brittle bridge 58 between the fourth slit 52 of the outer segment 22 and the second edge or outer edge 46 of that outer segment
22. The brittle bridges defined by the first, second, third and fourth slits are arranged in a longitudinally alternating series, as shown.
Elements similar to the elements represented by the numerical references of a line in Figures 1, 2 and 3 are represented by the numerical references of two lines in Figure 5, and by numeric references ·· ·· · »rich in three lines in Figure 6.
The alternative embodiment illustrated in Figure 4 is similar to the preferred embodiment illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3, except that the first slot 32 'of each loop 30' extending from each outer segment 22 'is closed in each from its ends 34 ', 38' and is spaced from the outer edge 36 'of the handle 30' so as to define a brittle bridge 60 'between the edge 34' closest to the edge 36 'and the first slot 32'. The fourth slot 52 'of each outer segment 22' is similar to the fourth slot 52 of each outer segment 22.
The simplified modality illustrated in Figure 5 is similar to the preferred modality illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3, except for the fact that the third and fourth slits have been omitted. The first slot 32 '' of each handle 30 '' extending from each outer segment 22 '1 It is similar to the first slot 32 of each loop 30. The additional modality illustrated in Figure 6 is similar to the alternative modality illustrated in Figure 4, except that the first and second slits of each loop 3111 they are sections of a continuous crack. In the additional modality illustrated in Figure 4, the pullout force exerted by a user on each handle 30 '' 1 it will be directed first parallel to the longitudinal direction of the loader support and then continuously directed perpendicularly, in a transverse direction in relation to the support, in order to ensure that the rupture occurs through the external segment 22111 formed with handle 30111 instead of occurring through that handle 30 1 ' 1 .
In each of the illustrated and contemplated modalities, the slits are arranged so that the outer segments are not substantially weakened, but so that the brittle bridges can be easily torn by a user who pulls the detachable handles.
