    THE CLAIMS DEFINING THE INVENTION ARE AS FOLLOWS:1. A dental composition for delivering a reduced amount of fluoride into a person's mouth when cleaning 5 teeth including: a base composition including a fluoride ion source that provides from about 10 ppm to about 3500 ppm of fluoride ions, an abrasive solid, and a carrier selected from the group consisting of liquids, gels, 10 pastes, and mixtures thereof, the base composition having a density;and a density reducing component dispersed throughout the base composition and included in an amount so as to yield a final dental composition having a density that is 15 at least about 30% less than the density of the base composition in order to thereby reduce the quantity of fluoride ions delivered per unit volume of the dental composition by at least about 30% relative to the base composition, wherein at least a portion of the density 20 reducing component includes a lower density solid filler, wherein the dental composition has a rheology such that it can be expressed onto a toothbrush as a coherent mass and a sufficiently low level of abrasiveness such that it is suitable for use in daily brushing.

    A dental composition as defined in claim 1, wherein the density reducing component is included in an amount so as to yield a final dental composition having a density that is at least about 50% less than the density 30 of the base composition in order to thereby reduce the quantity of fluoride ions delivered per unit volume of the dental composition by at least about 50% relative to the base composition.

    A dental composition as defined in claims 1 or 2 wherein a portion of the density reducing component further includes a gas that is dispersed throughout the H:\HelenF\Keep\speci\14512.99.doc 11/09/02 base composition during mixing such that the dental composition is a pre-foamed.

    A dental composition as defined in claim 3, 5 wherein the base composition further includes a foaming agent that stabilizes the pre-foamed dental composition such that the dental composition is capable of being stored for a desired period of time within a storage container without significant collapse of the foam.

    A dental composition as defined in claim 1, wherein the density reducing component consists essentially of the lower density solid filler. 15

    A dental composition as defined in any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the lower density solid filler has a density less than about 0.5 g/cm 3 .

    A dental composition as defined in any one of 20 claims 1 to 5, wherein the lower density solid filler has a density less than about 0.3 g/cm 3 .

    A dental composition as defined in any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the lower density solid filler has 25 a density less than about 0.1 g/cm 3 . 9· A dental composition as defined in any of the preceding claims wherein the lower density solid filler imparts abrasive activity to the dental composition in 30 addition to the abrasive solid within the base composition. 10· A dental composition as defined in any one of claims 1 to 4, 6 to 9, wherein the density reduction component includes a mixture of a gas and the lower density solid filler. A dental composition as defined in any one of claims 1 to 4, 6 to 10, wherein a portion of the density reduction component includes initially compressed gas that causes the base composition to foam and expand to form the 5 dental composition upon dispensing the base composition and compressed gas from a storage container onto a toothbrush.

    12. A dental composition as defined in claim 11, 10 wherein the compressed gas is premixed with the base composition and wherein the compressed gas and the base composition are initially stored within a pressurized storage container. 15

A dental composition as defined in claim 11, wherein the compressed gas is stored in a compartment separate from, but in communication with, a storage container containing the base composition such that the compressed gas is able to mix with the base composition 20 and causes the base composition to foam and expand upon dispensing a mixture of the base composition and compressed gas .

    14. A dental composition as defined in any of the 25 preceding claims, wherein the fluoride ion source is included in an amount such that the dental composition includes fluoride ions in a concentration in a range from about 850 ppm to about 1150 ppm. 30

    15. A dental composition as defined in any of the preceding claims, wherein the dental composition has a volume greater than about 125% relative to the volume of the base composition exclusive of the volume of the density reducing component.

    17. A dental composition as defined in any one of claims 1 to 14, wherein the dental composition has a volume greater than about 400% relative to the volume of the base composition exclusive of the volume of the density reducing component.

A dental composition as defined in any of the preceding claims, wherein the abrasive solid is selected from dicalcium orthophosphate, calcium carbonate, betaphase calcium pyrophosphate, sodium metaphosphate, long 15 chain polyphosphates, sodium hexametaphosphate, cyclic phosphates, sodium trimetaphosphate, alkylmetatripolyphosphates, sodium tripolyphosphate, potassium tripolyphonsphates, silica, amorphouse hydrated silica, sodium bicarbonate, potassium metaphosphate, tricalcium 20 phosphate, calcium phosphate dihydrate, anhydrous dicalcium phosphate, calcium pyrophosphate, magnesium orthophosphate, trimagnesium phosphate, alumina trihydrate, aluminum silicate, zirconium silicate, calcined alumina, bentonite, or mixtures thereof.

A dental composition as defined in any of the preceding claims, wherein the low density solid filler is selected from perlite, vermiculite, hollow glass spheres, lightweight expanded geologic materials, polypropylene 30 particles, cork, polystyrene foam particles, other expanded polymeric materials, or mixtures thereof.

A reduced density dental composition including:a base composition including a fluoride ion 35 source and a carrier selected from liquids, gels, pastes, or mixtures thereof, the base composition having a density;and H:\HelenF\Keep\speci\14512.99.doc 11/09/02 a lower density solid filler having a density less than about 0.5 g/cm 3 dispersed throughout the base composition and included in an amount so as to yield a final reduced density dental composition having a density 5 that is at least about 10¾ less than the density of the base composition in order to thereby reduce the quantity of fluoride ions delivered per unit volume of the dental composition by at least about 10¾ relative to the base composition.

    21. A dental composition as defined in claim 20, wherein the lower density solid filler has a density less than about 0.3 g/cm 3 . 15

A dental composition as defined in claim 20, wherein the lower density solid filler is included in an 30 amount so as to yield a final dental composition having a density that is at least about 30¾ less than the density of the base composition in order to thereby reduce the quantity of fluoride ions delivered per unit volume of the dental composition by at least about 30¾ relative to the 35 base composition.     26. A dental composition as defined in any one of 10 claims 20 to 25, wherein the lower density solid filler imparts abrasive activity to the dental composition.

    32. A method for delivering a dental composition containing a reduced amount of fluoride into a person's mouth, the method including:(a) expressing a quantity of a reduced density 10 dental composition as a coherent mass onto a tooth brush suitable for daily brushing, wherein the dental composition has a sufficiently low level of abrasiveness such that it is suitable for use in daily tooth brushing and includes 15 (i) a base composition including a fluoride ion source that provides from about 10 ppm to about 3500 ppm of fluoride ions, an abrasive solid, and a carrier selected from liquids, gels, pastes, or mixtures thereof, the base composition having a density, and 20 (ii) a density reducing component dispersed throughout the base composition and included in an amount so as to yield a final dental composition having a density that is at least about 30% less than the density of the base composition in order to thereby reduce the quantity 25 of fluoride ions delivered per unit volume of the dental composition by at least about 30% relative to the base composition, wherein at least a portion of the density reducing component includes a lower density solid filler;and 30 (b) brushing the person's teeth using the toothbrush and the dental composition.
