Catheter anchoring system

Abstract

A catheter anchoring system (10) is provided to securely anchor to a patient's skin a catheter (14) and fluid supply tube (12) interconnection. The anchoring system comprises a retainer (20) configured to receive a catheter adaptor (22) in a variety of positions. The adaptor (22) interconnects the catheter (14) and the fluid supply tube (12). The anchoring system (10) additionally includes a flexible, adhesive anchor pad (16) which supports a tube clip (24), as well as the retainer (20). The retainer (20) includes a channel (44) that is configured to receive the adaptor (22) in a snap-fit manner. The retainer (20) also includes a plurality of lateral slots (50). Each slot (50) is sized to receive and to capture a radially extending member (eg., an annular collar (200)) of the adaptor (22) to prevent the adaptor (22) from sliding within the channel (44). <IMAGE>

  1. 1
THE CLAIMS DEFINING THE INVENTION ARE AS FOLLOWS:1. An anchoring system, comprising: a catheter adaptor comprising a generally tubular body defined s between a distal end configured to engage a proximal end of a catheter, and a proximal end configured to couple a distal end of a tube, the catheter adaptor additionally comprising a radially extending member projecting radially from an exterior surface of said tubular body;and a retainer comprising a longitudinal extending channel having a plurality of slots extending laterally from the channel, each said slot being sized to receive and to capture the radially extending member of the adaptor : when said adaptor is positioned within said longitudinal channel of said | retainer so as to prevent said adaptor from sliding along the channel, said s i channel having longitudinally extending sections on opposite sides of the 1 slots, each of the longitudinally extending sections being configured to /receive the tubular body of the adaptor in a snap-fit manner.
  2. 30
An anchoring system, comprising:a retainer comprising a longitudinally extending channel and at least two lateral slots, each of said slots being sized to receive and to capture a radially extending member of an adaptor when said adaptor is positioned within said channel so as to prevent said adaptor from sliding in a longitudinal direction within said channel, said channel having sections that extend longitudinally on opposite sides of at least one of the slots, each channel section being configured to receive in a snap-fit manner a tubular body of the adaptor coupled to a distal end of a tube, and a flexible anchor pad comprising an adhesive bottom surface which is adapted to attach to a patient's skin, said anchor pad supporting said retainer.
  3. 31
A method of anchoring a catheter, comprising the steps of:positioning a base proximate to a catheter;sliding a retainer over said base to locate said retainer in a desired position relative to said catheter, wherein said retainer comprises a longitudinal extending channel and at least two lateral slots, each of said 14/8/98 β t r » * t ee «tec K Γ ft C v • C « ft C• et • c t « e t •«t c • t c • « t titc « *ft • * ft • « « « ·» • ftftft • «ft ft 4 ft ftft ft ft- C ·« ft • « « « «ft • •♦ft ft • ••ft «·ftaa♦ slots being sized to receive and to capture a radially extending member of an adaptor when said adaptor is positioned within said longitudinal channel of said retainer so as to prevent said adaptor from sliding in a longitudinal direction, said channel having sections that extend longitudinally on opposite sides of the slots, each of the channel sections being configured to receive in a snap-fit manner a tubular body of the adaptor coupled to a distal end of a tube;inserting the adaptor into said retainer with one of the lateral slots receiving the radially extending member of the adaptor to prevent said adaptor from moving relative to said retainer;and interlocking said retainer and said base to prevent said catheter adaptor from moving relative to said catheter
  4. 37
A method of anchoring a catheter/tube interconnection, comprising the steps of:providing an adaptor having a generally tubular body with a radially extending member;providing an anchor pad with an adhesive back, said anchor pad supporting a retainer configured to securely receive said adaptor, said retainer comprising a central channel, a series of lateral slots and sections that extend longitudinally on opposite sides of the slots, each of the channel sections being configured to receive in a snap-fit manner a tubular body of tlie adaptor coupled to a distal end of a tube;adhering said anchor pad proximate to a catheter;positioning said radially extending member above said series of lateral slots;deflecting said sections so as to open said channel to a size sufficient to receive said adaptor tubular body;inserting said adaptor tubular body into said channel;inserting said radially extending member into one slot of said series of slots;permitting said sections to spring back to an undeflected position such that said tubular body is captured within said central channel.
  5. 38
A method of anchoring a catheter and securing the interconnection between the catheter and a tube, said method comprising tlie steps of:4/8/98 providing an anchor pad supporting a retainer which comprises a longitudinal channel, said channel having sections configured to receive in a snap-fit manner, a tubular body of an adaptor, said retainer further comprising a plurality of alike lateral slots sized to receive and to capture a 5 radially extending member of the adaptor, said sections being spaced apart by at least one slot;said anchoring pad having a trapezoidal shape formed by a longer distal edge and a shorter proximal edge, said anchor pad further comprising an adhesive backing;positioning said anchor pad such that said shorter proximal side is 10 generally adjacent to said catheter;and adhering said anchor pad proximate to said catheter.
  6. 39
A catheter anchoring system substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
  7. 40
A method of anchoring a catheter substantially as hereinbefore 15 described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
