    THE CLAIMS DEFINING THE INVENTION ARE AS FOLLOWS :OS ^λ-S ΟΙ. · An aqueous functional fluidk oonteawiiftg — hijaraukvc βΓ ‘rlu'ick, c.c r taAv»iKg °-/copolymer prepared by emulsion or solution copolymerization, initiated by free radicals, of unsaturated copolymerizable monomers and, where relevant, subsequent partial or complete neutralization of free acid groups of the copolymer by addition of a base, the copolymer being built up from:- (a) 1 - 60% by weight of ethylenically unsaturated (Cg-C^-monocarboxylic acids, ethylenically unsaturated (C^-Cg)-dicarboxylic acids, or monesters thereof with aliphatic (C.-C q )-alcohols, or mixtures of these* . J X Ό » ·» · monomers;(b) 0.5 - 30% by weight of a surface-active unsaturated ester of the general formula:- .* . J • 8· 4 R 1 -CH=CR 2 -C-O-(CH 2 -CH 2 -O) n -R (I) ·**·*· ··4 • · · 1 2 ·· * in which n denotes a number from 2 to 100, R and R denote hydrogen or methyl;and R denotes an aliphatic (Ci 2 -C 2 g)-alkyl radical which is linear or branched, a «ο»©*, di-, or tri-alkylphenyl radical with alkyl groups of, - (CH 2 -(jH-0 ) m - (CH 2 -CH 2 -O )p-R 3 (lib) ch 3 in which m represents a number from 10 to 100, p represents a number from 0 to 100 and R 3 represents H, crotyl, (C^-Cgg)-alkyl, phenyl or alkyphenyl with (C 1 ~C 20 )-alkyl groups, or R denotes a perfluorinated or partially fluorinated (Cj-C^)-alkyl radical (c) 30 - 85% by weight of methacrylic acid esters - V—. or acrylic acid esters of aliphatic (C^-C^g)-alcohols or a mixture of these esters;(d) 0 - 40% by weight -f other ethylenically unsaturated comonomers;(e) 0 - 3% by weight of polyethylenically unsaturated compounds;and (f) 0 - 5% by weight of molecular weight regulators .

    The aqueous functional fluid as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein (e) is selected from the group consisting of divinylbenzene, diallyl phthalate, butanediol diacrylate, and butamediol dimethacrylate.

    The aqueous functional fluid as claimed in any the preceding claims, wherein (f) is selected from I ft the group consisting of dodecylmercaptan, tetrakis-mercaptoacetyl-pentaerythritol, carbon tetrachloride, and bromotrichloromethane .
