High resolution ink-jet printing on edibles and products made

Abstract

A process for printing high resolution images on a confectionery product comprising the steps of: (a) providing digital image information; (b) processing the digital image information to prepare processed digital image information; (c) depositing a thin layer of a compatibility-enhancing component on a surface of said confectionery product to provide an enhanced-compatibility surface of said product, followed by (d) printing an image from the processed digital image information onto said enhanced-compatibility surface with a drop on demand ink-jet printer using a dispersed-pigment food-grade ink to obtain a printed image having resolution greater than 79 dots per cm (200 dpi). Also provided is a confectionery product obtainable by a process according to the invention, wherein said product has a thin layer of a compatibility-enhancing component on at least one surface thereof, and said image having a resolution greater than 79 dots per cm (200 dpi) is printed onto said thin layer.

THE CLAIMS DEFINING THE INVENTION ARE AS FOLLOWS:1. A system for custom manufacturing a decorated sugar shell candy or jellybean on the basis of instructions of a consumer, the system comprising: a server computer adapted to: communicate over a network with a client computer of the consumer, receive over the network, from the client computer, image information submitted to the client computer by the consumer, and communicate the received image information to an ink-jet printer to cause printing directly on a non-planar surface of said sugar shell candy or jellybean of a high quality image that corresponds with the received image information.
  2. 2
A system according to Claim 1, wherein the network is the Internet and the client computer is operable to run Web browser software adapted to send and receive Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) forms over the World Wide Web.
  3. 3
A system according to Claim 1, wherein the network is a local area network.
  4. 4
A system according to any one of Claims 1 to 3, wherein the ink-jet printer prints directly on sugar shell candy or jellybean using a dispersed pigment foodgrade ink to obtain a printed image having resolution greater than 200 dpi even if printed using a single printhead and single pass printing.
  5. 5
A system according to Claim 4, wherein the ink-jet printer is a drop-ondemand ink-jet printer.
  6. 6
A system according to Claim 4 or Claim 5, wherein the printed image has a resolution between 300 and 1200 dpi.
  7. 7
A method on a server computer on a network for facilitating custom manufacturing of a decorated sugar shell candy or jellybean on the basis of instructions of a consumer, the method comprising:2006201115 29 Oct 2008 communicating over the network with a client computer of the consumer, receiving over the network, from the client computer, image information submitted to the client computer by the consumer, and communicating the received image information to an ink-jet printer to cause printing directly on a non-planar surface of said sugar shell candy or jellybean of a high quality image that corresponds with the received image information.
  8. 8
A method according to Claim 7, wherein the network is the Internet and the client computer is operable to run Web browser software adapted to send and receive Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) forms over the World Wide Web.
  9. 9
A method according to Claim 7, wherein the network is a local area network.
  10. 10
A method according to any one of Claims 7 to 9, wherein the ink-jet printer prints directly on sugar shell candy or jellybean using a dispersed pigment foodgrade ink to obtain a printed image having resolution greater than 200 dpi even if printed using a single printhead and single pass printing.
  11. 11
A method according to Claim 10, wherein the ink-jet printer is a drop-ondemand ink-jet printer.
  12. 12
A method according to any one of Claims 7 to 11, wherein the printed image has a resolution between 300 and 1200 dpi.
  13. 13
A computer-readable medium storing executable code adapted to control a server computer on a network to perform a method for facilitating custom manufacturing of a decorated sugar shell candy or jellybean on the basis of instructions of a consumer, the method comprising:communicating over the network with a client computer of the consumer, receiving over the network, from the client computer, image information submitted to the client computer by the consumer, and 2006201115 29 Oct 2008 communicating the received image information to an ink-jet printer to cause printing directly on a non-planar surface of said sugar shell candy or jellybean of a high quality image that corresponds with the received image information.
  14. 14
A computer-readable medium according to Claim 13, wherein the network is the Internet and the client computer is operable to run Web browser software adapted to send and receive Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) forms over the World Wide Web.
