Capsule with biasing sealing member

Abstract

A capsule (1) for containing beverage ingredients is designed to be inserted in a beverage production device (2) in order to have water under pressure enter the capsule (1) in order to interact with the ingredients (3) in the capsule (1), wherein the capsule (1) comprises an base body (4) and a foil member (5) closing the base body (4) by being attached to a flange-like rim (6) extending from the side wall (7) of the base body (4) of the capsule (1). The capsule (1) thereby comprises a resiliently deflectable sealing member (8), the sealing member (8) being designed to be biased against a sealing surface (15) of the beverage production device (2), when the capsule (1) is positioned in the beverage production device (2). The sealing engagement of the sealing member of the capsule and the sealing surface is self-reinforcing when pressurized.

  1. 1
CLAIMS 1. A capsule for containing beverage ingredients, the capsule being designed for insertion in a beverage production device in order to have a liquid under pressure enter the capsule in order to interact with the ingredients in the capsule, wherein the exterior of the capsule presents a resiliently deflectable sealing member by the fluid under pressure;the sealing member is part of a flange-like rim of the capsule wherein the flange-like rim comprises a clamping portion that bears clamping forces when the capsule is held in position in the beverage device, wherein said clamping portion forms an annular surface and the sealing member prolongs the clamping portion, the capsule further comprising a foil member adapted to be tom onto relief elements of the beverage device.
  2. 5
The capsule according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the capsule comprises a cup-shaped base body, the resiliently deflectable sealing member is provided at the side wall of the base body of the capsule.
  3. 6
The capsule according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the sealing member is made from a flexible material.
  4. 7
The capsule according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the capsule and the sealing member are made from plastics. - 162005298955 30 Nov 2011
  5. 8
The capsule according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the sealing member is designed to produce a self-reinforcing sealing arrangement when pressurized against the sealing surface.
  6. 9
A beverage producing system, comprising a capsule according to any of the preceding claims and a beverage production device, the beverage production device having at least one sealing surface against which the sealing member of the capsule is biased when the capsule is positioned in the beverage production device and/or when water pressure is installed in the beverage production device for water to traverse only inside the capsule.
  7. 10
A beverage producing system, comprising a capsule according to any of claims 1 to 9 and a beverage production device, the beverage production device having an enclosing member having a sealing surface being in sealing engagement with the sealing member of the capsule when the capsule is positioned in the enclosing member, the sealing engagement being self-reinforcing when pressurized.
  8. 11
A method for producing a beverage, the method comprising the following steps:providing a capsule containing ingredients, positioning the capsule in a beverage production device, providing clamping on a clamping portion of the flange-like rim so that the capsule is held in position in the device, producing at least a first opening in a first wall member of the capsule, having a liquid enter the capsule at said at least first opening in the base body, and, producing at least a second opening in a second wall member and draining a beverage from the second opening of the capsule, separating the two openings by a sealing engagement of at least one sealing surface of the beverage production device and a sealing member at the exterior of the capsule, the sealing member being biased against the sealing surface of the beverage producing device, and wherein said clamping portion forms an annular surface and the sealing member prolongs the clamping portion.
  9. 12
A method for producing a beverage, the method comprising the steps of:-172005298955 30 Nov 2011 providing a capsule containing ingredients, positioning the capsule in a beverage production device, providing clamping on a clamping portion of the flange-like rim so that the capsule is held in position in the device, producing at least a first opening in a first wall member of the capsule, having a liquid enter the capsule at the first opening in the base body, producing at least a second opening in a second wall member and draining a beverage from the second opening of the capsule, and separating the at least first and second openings by a sealing engagement of at least one sealing surface of the beverage production device and a sealing member at the exterior of the capsule, the sealing engagement being self-reinforcing when pressurized and wherein said clamping portion forms an annular surface and the sealing member prolongs the clamping portion.
