Video endoscope

Abstract

A video endoscope system (10) includes a reusable control cabinet (50) and an endoscope (20) that is connectable thereto. The encoscope may be used with a single patient and then disposed. The endoscope includes an illumination mechanism, an image sensor, and an elongate sahft (24) having one or more lumens located therein. An articularion joint at the distal end of the endoscope allows the distal end to be oriented by the actuators (110,112) in the control cabinet or actuators in a control handle of the endoscope. Fluidics, electrical, navigation, image, display and data entry controls are integrated into the system along with other accessories.

  1. 1
THE CLAIMS DEFINING THE INVENTION ARE AS FOLLOWS:1. An endoscope, comprising: a shaft having a distal end and a proximal end and a plurality of lumens therein;an image sensor positioned at or adjacent the distal end for producing image signals;one or more control cables having ends secured at or adjacent the distal end of the shaft, that are selectively tensioned to orient the distal end of the shaft in a desired direction;a handle positioned on the shaft including one or more manually operated controls that selectively tension the one or more control cables to orient the distal end of the shaft in the desired direction;and a connector at the proximal end of the shaft that is releasably securable to a control cabinet, wherein the proximal connector includes a manifold for selectively delivering liquid to the plurality of lumens in the shaft, wherein the manifold includes a housing, an inlet for receiving fluid from a fluid source, a port for delivering fluid to a plurality of fluid paths, and a tube connecting the inlet and the port and extending external the housing.
  2. 2
The endoscope of Claim 1 further comprising:an illumination source at or adjacent the distal end of the shaft.
  3. 3
The endoscope of Claim 2, wherein the illumination source produces a flashing light so that the distal end of the shaft can be seen through the patient's body.
  4. 4
The endoscope of Claim 3, wherein the flashing light has a frequency of 8-14 hertz.
  5. 5
The endoscope of any one of claims 2 to 4, wherein the illumination source includes one or more LEDs. 800833470 2005292229 23 Feb 2012
  6. 6
The endoscope of any one of claims 2 to 5, wherein the illumination source includes a fiber optic illumination guide.
  7. 7
The endoscope of Claim 3, whereby the image sensor produces image signals representative of tissue illuminated by the illumination source for display on a video monitor, wherein the image sensor or video monitor is disabled when the illumination source produces the flashing light.
  8. 8
The endoscope of Claim 1, further comprising:an illumination source that produces illumination light at the distal end of the shaft;a display on which image signals produced by the image sensor are displayed;and a controller for pulsing the illumination source to produce a flashing illumination and for creating a flicker-free display during the pulsing of the illumination source in order to see the distal end of the shaft through a patient’s body.
  9. 9
The system of Claim 8, wherein the display is flicker-free by any one of the following:displaying a static image;disabling the image sensor;turning off the display;and disabling electronics that process image signals from the image sensor.
  10. 10
The endoscope of Claim 1, wherein the proximal connector further comprises one or more of:a liquid connector for receiving an irrigation liquid for supply to the plurality of lumens in the shaft;800833470 2005292229 23 Feb 2012 a gas connector for receiving an insufflation air/gas for supply to the plurality of lumens in the shaft;and an electrical connector for receiving electrical signals from a control cabinet and for delivering the image signals to the control cabinet.
  11. 11
The endoscope of Claim 10, wherein the electrical connector further includes a connection for receiving an externally generated clocking signal for use by the image sensor to serially transmit the image signals.
  12. 12
The endoscope of Claim 10 or 11, wherein the endoscope includes a temperature sensor and the electrical connector further includes a connection for coupling a signal from the temperature sensor to the control cabinet.
  13. 14
The endoscope of Claim 17, wherein the detector is a bar code reader or an RF ID tag reader.
  14. 18
An endoscope having a distal end, comprising:an illumination source;an irrigation lumen at the distal end for irrigating a lumen of a patient;800833470 2005292229 23 Feb 2012 an imaging lens for capturing images within the patient;a working channel terminating at the distal end;a plurality of fluid supply lumens disposed along the endoscope, each in separate fluid communication with one of the illumination source, the irrigation lumen, and the imaging lens;and a manifold for selectively delivering liquid to the plurality of fluid supply lumens, wherein the manifold includes a housing, an inlet for receiving fluid from a fluid source, a port for delivering fluid to a plurality of fluid paths, and a tube connecting the inlet and the port and extending external the housing.
  15. 21
An endoscope system, comprising:a console configured to supply a fluid;an endoscope coupled to the console and including: a plurality of fluid supply lumens;an illumination source;an imaging lens for capturing images within a patient;and a working channel terminating at a distal end of the endoscope;a manifold coupled to the console and configured to selectively direct fluid to the plurality of fluid supply lumens from the console, wherein the manifold includes a housing, an inlet for receiving fluid from a fluid source, a 800833470 2005292229 23 Feb 2012 port for delivering fluid to a plurality of fluid paths, and a tube connecting the inlet and the port and extending external the housing;and wherein the endoscope and the manifold each is separately detachable from the console.
