Method and apparatus for monitoring or controlling a gaming machine based on gaming machine location

Abstract

Methods of tracking and locating gaming machines 124, possibly using transmitters and receivers 150A, which are then controlled according to their location are disclosed. The machines may be controlled via a host computer 128. In one embodiment, the functioning of the gaming machines is controlled according to a distance parameter and location. All machines within the distance parameter receive a control signal from a reference gaming machine, the control signal changing an aspect of operation of the gaming machines. In another embodiment, gaming machines are controlled so that they are in compliance with gaming location regulations within a casino. Also, the location data may be used to highlight a winning event on a gaming machine to other gaming machines. A computing device receives a signal indicating that a winning event has occurred on a gaming machine and sends a control signal to other machines based upon their location. This could be to machines near to the winning machine. Aspects of the gaming machines that could be controlled are: audio or video output, payout rates, machine denomination, game availability, synchronising events, etc.. Gaming machines could also be linked to a progressive jackpot system based upon their location.

CLAIMS:1. A method for synchronizing an aspect of operation for two or more gaming machines comprising: defining a distance parameter;5 defining one or more reference gaming machines;analyzing the location of one or more gaming machines in relation to said one or more reference gaming machines and the distance parameter to form a subset of gaming machines;generating a control signal to control operation of the aspect of gaming machine 10 operation;and transmitting the control signal to the subset of gaming machines to thereby control the aspect of operation of the subset of gaming machines.
  2. 2
The method of Claim 1, wherein the aspect of gaming machine operation 15 comprises audio emitted from a gaming machine of said subset of gaming machines.
  3. 3
The method of Claim 1, wherein an aspect of gaming machine operation comprises video shown on a video screen of a gaming machine of said subset of gaming machines.
  4. 4
The method of Claim 1, wherein the distance parameter comprises data regarding which gaming machines will have the aspect of operation synchronized.
  5. 5
The method of Claim 1, wherein transmitting the control signals occurs 25 over a computer network.
  6. 6
A system for controlling two or more gaming machines upon an occurrence of a winning event, the system comprising:a gaming machine location system configured to generate location data 30 regarding the locations of a plurality of gaming machines in relation to a gaming machine having a winning event;a computing device configured to: receive winning event data regarding said winning event at a said gaming -23 Ό ο ο CM Η-5 Ό Ι> σ> CC ο ο CM CC ο Ο CM machine;control at least one aspect of gaming machine operation;process the location data and the winning event data to generate control signals directed to said two or more gaming machines;and 5 a communication apparatus configured to communicate the control signals from the computing device to said two or more gaming machines.
