Radially expanding interbody spinal fusion implants and instrumentation for insertion thereof

Abstract

An implant intervertebral arthrodesis (100) for implantation since, at least in part, a posterior access, at least in part within and across the height of a disc space between two adjacent vertebral bodies of a spine of a person adult, said implant (100) comprising: a body having a front end (104) for insertion in the first into the disc space, a trailing end (102) disposed opposite said front end (104), a longitudinal axis medium, and an extension between said front and rear of said body ends, said body having an upper portion (106a) adapted to contact one of the adjacent vertebral bodies, an opposite bottom portion (106b) to said upper portion (106a) adapted to contact the other of the adjacent vertebral bodies, and at least one side portion (108a), (108b) between said upper (106a) and lower (106b), each of said upper portions, lower and side (106a) , (106b), (108a), (108b) having a length and extending from said rear side (102) of said body and being spaced apart to form a hollow interior (103) therebetween, the hollow interior being above (103) configured for holding therein at least part of the material to promote bone ingrowth, said upper and lower portions (106a), (106b) configured being to allow ingrowth of bone adjacent vertebral body to adjacent vertebral body through said body said implant (100) being configured each of said top, bottom and side portions (106a), (106b), (108a), (108b) to move, at least in part, in a direction away from the median longitudinal axis allowing expansion of the height and at least a portion of the width of said body, wherein said upper, lower and side portions (106a), (106b), (108a), (108b) a position depressed relative to each other allowing a height and a width blasted from said body and an expanded position relative to each other allowing a height and a width expanded from said body, the height and width expanded from said body greater than the width and height blasted said body, respectively; and an expander (120) disposed at least partly within said hollow interior (103), being configured said stent (120) to fit cooperatively with a strut (200) adapted to be inserted through said rear end (102 ) of said body to engage and move said extender (120) from a position proximate said forward end (104) when said body is in the remote lowered position of said leading end (104) and to said rear end (102) said body for positioning said body in the expanded position, said stent (120) adapted to contact and move said top, bottom and side portions (106a), (106b), 108a), (108b), and away from the longitudinal axis through said body; presenting each of said top, bottom and side portions (106a), (106b), (108a), (108b) having an outer side and an inner side (114) facing toward said hollow interior (103), said inner side ( 114): a ramp (116) having a forward slope in a direction away from said front end toward the middle longitudinal axis; a ramp back having a slope in a direction away from said forward end and away from said longitudinal median axis; and a seat (118); said seat (118) of said upper portions, bottom and sides of said body adapted to engage cooperatively with said stent (120) for positioning said stent (120) in a fixed position being along said extension of said body, said ramp said upper portions, bottom and side of said body configured to provide resistance to displacement of said stent (120) of said fixed position being backward when said implant (100) is in the expanded position, said stent (120) adapted to retain at least a portion of said bottom and side upper portions (106a), (106b), (108a), (108b), to maintain the height and width expanded said body and to resist the depression of said body with respect to the height and width of the folded body when said body is in the expanded position.
