Reversible nuclear genetic system for male sterility in transgenic plants

Abstract

Method of manufacturing a male sterile plant comprising (a) providing a plant comprising a recombinant DNA molecule comprising (i) a DNA sequence encoding a gene product that, when expressed in a plant inhibits the formation or pollen function, and (ii) a promoter comprising a sequence of nucleotides selected from the group consisting of (a) a nucleotide sequence of the nucleotide sequence set forth in figure 1 showing the ability to control the expression of a DNA sequence in anther tissue; (B) the nucleotide sequence set forth in Figure 1; (C) a nucleotide sequence extending at least 503 base pairs upstream relative to the start codon at nucleotide position 1488 of Figure 1; (D) a nucleotide sequence extending from position -503 to the position -1 upstream relative to the start codon at nucleotide position 1488 of Figure 1; (E) a nucleotide sequence extending from position -587 to the position -1 upstream relative to the start codon at nucleotide position 1488 of Figure 1; (F) a nucleotide sequence extending from position -890 to the position -1 upstream relative to the start codon at nucleotide position 1488 of Figure 1; and (g) a nucleotide sequence extending from position -503 to the position -134 upstream relative to the start codon at nucleotide position 1488 of Figure 1; wherein said promoter is operably linked with said DNA sequence encoding a gene product; and (b) developing said plant under conditions such that male sterility as a result of the expression of said DNA sequence is achieved.
