Method and apparatus for measurement and identification of gsm co-channel interfering transmitters

Abstract

A method for characterizing components of base stations transmitting on the same channel, thus interfering with each other, in a GSM cellular wireless network in which a plurality of base stations transmit, each a multiframe signal 51 including a plurality of bursts FCCH, SCH a plurality of bursts and a plurality of BCCH bursts, the method comprising: a) receiving signals within the intended coverage zone of the GSM wireless cellular network; b) correlating the received signals with a signal waveform FCCH burst to identify a set of FCCH correlation peaks therein; c) for each peak FCCH correlation given within that set of peaks FCCH correlation, generating data representing the arrival time and power level for the correlation peak given FCCH, and add the data to a file of data; d) for at least one FCCH correlation peak within said given set of FCCH correlation peaks, scheduling decoding operations SCH bursts during a time window arrival time obtained peak given FCCH correlation; e) operations of detection and decoding SCH bursts on said signals during each time window programmed d) to thereby identify BSIC data and RFN data encoded in a given SCH burst detected within said signal, and add time data arrival, said BSIC data and number data based on said RFN data frame for the given SCH burst to the data file; f) for each given SCH burst detected and decoded successfully in e), identifying a plurality of windows of time of arrival within the 51-multiframe based on the data arrival time and data of frame number the given SCH burst, and update the data file to associate the BSIC data and data of frame number for the given SCH burst with the data power level for each peak FCCH correlation whose time of arrival falls within said plurality of windows arrival time of the multiframe 51.
