System and method for detecting unauthorized wireless access points

A system for securing a network, comprising: a network monitor configured to monitor a network regarding access points unauthorized (180); and a server in a wired portion (110) of the network configured to receive a message from a wireless device (170), the message indicating the existence of an access point (150) being further configured the server to query a database data to determine if the access point (150) is authorized and to determine whether the access point (150) is connected to the wired network portion (110) of the network; said system being characterized in that the network monitor is further configured to disable wireless communications via an unauthorized access point (180), unauthorized access point (180) being connected to said wired network portion (110) of the network; where unauthorized access point (180) comprises a MAC address filter for prohibiting access to the access point (180) based on information containing one or more MAC addresses; and the network monitor is further configured to set the MAC address filter of the unauthorized access point (180) to prohibit access by any wireless device (170) to the access point (180).
