Apparatus and method for forming inflated containers

Apparatus for making inflated containers from a film web (12) having two juxtaposed film plies (14, 16), comprising: a. a mechanism (18) that carries the film web along a path; b. a first sealing device (20) for producing first (32a) and second (32b) spaced-apart seals that join the sheets of film to form a series of containers (34), each with at least one opening (36) wherein the film web has a closed longitudinal edge and an open opposite longitudinal edge, said first (32a) and second (32b) spaced substantially transverse seals define, along with closed longitudinal edge of the film web, the containers (34), the open longitudinal edge provides at least one opening (36) into the containers (34), wherein said first sealing device (20) moves with the film web (12) for producing said first and second seals (32a, 32b) as the web is conveyed along the path; c. a controller for controlling the action of said first sealing device (20), said controller works to make the first sealing device form the first (32a) and second (32b) seals with an amount of space specified in the package given producing packings therefore such that any two consecutive containers in said series of containers have the same length dimension or length dimension different, as determined by said controller; d. an inflation assembly (23) for inflating the containers by directing a flow of gas into the openings thereof; and e. sealing a second device (23) to close the opening (36) of the inflated containers (34).
