The present invention relates to an internal combustion engine, in particular a stationary gas engine, with a mixture-carrying line upstream of a compressor and a mixture cooler downstream of the compressor as well as with a mixture-carrying line pointing out of the mixture cooler, the mixture-carrying lines pointing to the compressor and those pointing out of the mixture cooler via a are connected to the bypass leading around the compressor and the mixture cooler.
In gasoline engines with mixture charging, uncontrolled ignition of the mixture in the mixture lines can occur. The mixture in the area between the air intake and intake valves is suddenly burned (deflagration, deflagration, detonation, explosion, etc.). This can destroy engine components. The combustion starts in the area of the engine block or in the area of the inlet valves. The flame front of the combustion runs along the paths given by the mixture lines. In the case of gasoline engines equipped with compressors, this can lead to the destruction of the compressor and other components if the flame front of the combustion reaches the compressor directly via the bypass.
In DE 19856993 A1 a deflagration protection is attached directly in front of each valve of the gas-powered internal combustion engine in order to remedy this problem. However, this arrangement of the deflagration protection has the disadvantage that the efficiency of the internal combustion engine is reduced.
In the internal combustion engines of the generic type, a mixture cooler is connected downstream of the compressor. In addition to the main task of the mixture cooler according to the designation, it also has the function of deflagration protection in the main line of the fuel-gas mixture. This additional function is brought about by the large surface inside the mixture cooler. However, the mixture cooler cannot stop the unwanted propagation of the deflagration through the bypass.
The object of the invention is to arrange deflagration protection in the mixture lines in such a way that this does not cause any additional reduction in the efficiency of the internal combustion engine.
This is achieved according to the invention in that at least one deflagration protection is arranged in the bypass.
This inventive arrangement of deflagration protection effectively protects the compressor and other components in the event of undesired deflagrations or burns in the bypass, with effective deflagration protection for the entire system being provided together with the mixture cooler. Furthermore, the arrangement of the deflagration protection in the bypass does not cause any relevant power loss in the internal combustion engine.
The effectiveness of the deflagration protection is particularly improved in that the bypass has a widened cross-section in the area of the deflagration protection. On the one hand, this enlarged effective cross-section achieves better heat dissipation in the event of a deflagration, and on the other hand, the gas flow is less hindered by the larger flow cross-section.
A structurally particularly simple variant provides that the deflagration protection has at least one grid. Alternatively, the deflagration protection can have at least two preferably crossed grids. These grids must be made of a material that conducts heat well, in particular metal. This design of the deflagration protection provides effective protection of the internal combustion engine from destruction by unwanted deflagrations.

Further features and details of the present invention emerge from the following description of the figures. It shows
1 shows an internal combustion engine according to the invention, shown schematically,
2 shows a side view of the expanded cross section of the bypass in the area of the deflagration protection
Fig. 3 is a schematic plan view of a horizontal grid
4 shows a schematic side view of the deflagration protection with two grids arranged therein.
In the internal combustion engine shown in FIG. 1, the fresh air 2 is mixed with the combustible gas 1 and fed to the compressor 4 in the mixture-carrying line 3. The air-gas mixture then flows through the mixture cooler 5 into the mixture-carrying line 7 to the engine block 8 with the inlet valves 9. According to the invention, the deflagration protection 11 is arranged in the bypass 6.
If there are unwanted deflagrations in the area of the engine block 8 or the inlet valves 9, these will spread along the mixture line 7 in the direction of the mixture cooler 5 and
Bypass 6 off. The deflagration protection 11 according to the invention and the mixture cooler 5 effectively stop the spreading deflagration and the compressor 4 and the other upstream components of the engine are protected from damage from unwanted deflagrations.
2 shows a variant of the widened cross section of the bypass 6 in the area of the deflagration protection 11. The deflagration protection 11 is arranged between two conical pipe sections 10. The widening of the bypass 6 is achieved by means of these conical pipe sections 10.
Fig. 3 shows that made of a highly thermally conductive material, preferably metal, formed grid, which stops an incoming deflagration front by rapid heat dissipation.
In the side view in Fig. 4, two grids 12 are arranged crossed in the deflagration protection 11.
