Capstan (6) for raising and lowering persons, comprising: a casing provided with a first connecting element (16), a first opening (17) in substantially housing facing the first connecting element, an electric motor (30) connected to the input of a reduction gear (28, 29), a coil (27) connected to the output of the reduction gear (28, 29), a traction elongate flexible (7) connected to the coil for winding and unwinding the element traction (7) for raising and lowering a person, characterized in that the housing is provided with a second opening (19) and the pulling element (7) being guided through the first opening (17) or through the second opening (19).
