Self-compensating antennas for substrates having differing dielectric constant values

Abstract

A wireless communication system comprising: a wireless communication device (32); and an antenna system (10, 28, 40) including at least one conductive (12, 30, 42) tab, and including one or both of the following: (a) a plurality of selected electrical components to form a network of impedance matching, coupled to at least one conductive tab and the wireless communication device, wherein the electrical components interact electrically with any of the different dielectric materials in proximity to the antenna system, to self-compensate for different electrical characteristics of different dielectric materials, to maintain a substantial impedance match between the antenna system and the wireless communication device; and, (b) a structural element forming a trap circuit selectively shunting the frequency (44) formed in the conductive tab and which interacts electrically with any of the different dielectric materials in proximity to the antenna system, to self-compensate the different electrical characteristics of the different dielectric materials, to maintain a substantial impedance match between the antenna system and the wireless communication device.
