A system and method for inputting text symbols are described in the electronic device including a reduced keyboard having keys representing a plurality of characters. Possible symbol variants are identified based on the input characters received from the reduced keyboard. Each identified symbol variant in accordance with the type of the symbol variant is grouped into groups of the associated priority of the plurality of the symbol variant groups one each having. Symbol variants are, in at least one group of the symbol variant groups, frequency of use of the symbol variants in order of decreasing rates it is set. A list of symbol variants comprising the plurality of the symbol variant groups in the order of decreasing priority order and displayed on the next, the input symbols are selected from the list of symbol variants. By doing so, the symbol variants of the at least one group of said groups of symbol variants are sorted by priority and frequency of use.
