System and method using adaptive antennas to selectively reuse common physical channel timeslots for dedicated channels

Abstract

A method in a wireless communication system of timeslots reuse common physical channel (CPCH) for transmitting signals dedicated physical channel DPCH at a power level that does not exceed a maximum power level, the system including ( i) a plurality of cells, wherein each cell has a plurality of angular sections; (Ii) a plurality of radio units transmit / receive (WTRU); (Iii) a radio access network (RAN) for collecting metrics associated with the quality of the CPCH timeslots and received power measured by said WTRUs; (Iv) a plurality of base stations which transmit CPCH signals over a plurality of timeslots, having the aforementioned base stations some adaptive antennas operating in respective cells mentioned, where each base station is in communication with the respective units mentioned WTRU; and (v) unabase data that associates the cells with the adaptive antennas of the base stations, the method characterized in that: (a) the RAN determines that the communication system has a stable distribution of CPCH metrics for each angular section of each cell; (B) label (430, 432) in the database, each CPCH timeslots as aggressive or non-aggressive; (C) increasing (430) by a predetermined amount the power of the DPCH signal transmitted by the base station in each time interval CPCH, which is labeled as non-aggressive, and where the power is below a maximum power level default; (D) monitoring (445) metrics associated with the quality of the CPCH timeslot is performed; and (e) each angular section of each cell associated with a degradation of CPCH quality, determining the respective neighboring cells, reducing (455) the maximum power level for the time intervals CPCH in the neighboring cells associated with the degradation of CPCH quality, and tagging (460) in the database, the neighboring cells as aggressive for the CPCH timeslots associated with the degradation of CPCH quality.
