Abstract

A method for estimating an error rate for communications received, the method comprising the steps of: decoding (51) iteratively each of a plurality of received symbol sequences to provide a respective plurality of data sequences; providing (53) the number of iterations performed to provide each of the plurality of data streams; and estimating (55) an error rate for received communications based on the number of iterations performed to provide each of the plurality of data sequences, characterized in that the estimation operation comprises the step of: calculating an average number of iterations performed to provide each of the plurality of data sequences and estimating the error rate using the average number of iterations performed.
