Method for removing mercury from flue gas

Abstract

A method for controlling mercury emissions in an industrial process having a flue gas containing a quantity of insoluble elemental mercury, the method comprising the following steps: (a) providing the flue gas to a scrubber wet that aqueous liquor has an alkaline washing (B) mixing the flue gas with an oxidising reagent containing chlorine in an amount sufficient to convert all the elemental mercury into a kind of soluble mercury; (C) mixing the flue gas with a sulfide species provided in an amount sufficient to convert the soluble mercury species into insoluble mercuric sulfide; (D) wherein step (b) and step (c) occur separately so that unwanted species directly between the chlorine and sulfur reactions are avoided; (E) create an interface gas - liquid within the scrubber wet in order to: (i) drag sulfide insoluble mercury generated by step (b) and step (c) into the wash liquor and (ii) remove all mercury species from the flue gas; and (f) evacuating the combustion gas free of mercury scrubber wet.
