System and computer readable medium for controlling home appliances

A system for controlling the operation of an appliance, comprising: a handheld remote control (10) having a keyboard (24) including a plurality of keys, a memory (22) to store the library of codes orders for their use in controlling the operation of the appliance and programming to map or assign command codes from library command codes to the keyboard keys (24), a radio frequency receiver (36) circuit and a transmission circuit infrared (26), a re-transmitting unit (12) including a corresponding to a keypad key button (24) (14) and a transmission circuit RF (42) to send a command signal RF to the remote control hand (10), in response to activation of button (14), including the signal sequence RF data identifying the button (14), wherein in response to receiving the command signal RF by the radio frequency receiver (36) circuit, the handheld remote control (10) uses the data identifying the button (14) to make the circuit infrared transmission (26) transmit to the appliance code orders from the library command codes that are assigned to the keyboard key (24) that corresponds to the button (14).
